Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Conference | Making Cities3: Innovation, Incubation, Inclusion

Making Cities3: Innovation, Incubation, Inclusion is part of a three-year research project between the Chulalongkorn University (Bangkok), University of Buenos Aires and the New School and will focus on three cities: Bangkok, Buenos Aires and New York through a multidisciplinary approach. While the previous seminar in Buenos Aires in May 2013 focused heavily on exclusion, the September Symposium hopes to extend our study of exclusion/inclusion to the productive side of the economy. They will explore three central themes: innovation, incubation and inclusion in order to better understand the complex dynamics of the maker economy within cities and the areas of convergence between design and the social sciences in each of the three cities.

Workshop | Intro Class: Mantra and Meditation

With: Thomas Amelio. Many of us long to make deep and lasting change in our lives, but often try to do so from a viewpoint that is itself the problem. Meditation can help us make a lasting shift into a new consciousness altogether. Mantras are powerful and ancient sound-vibration formulas that de-clutter the mind and transform our bodies, minds and spirits in profound ways. In this class, learn and experience some of the meditation and mantra practices of the esoteric yoga tradition: basic awareness and breath meditation; self-inquiry (atma vichara); mantra japa meditation; bij (seed) mantras; shakti (power) mantras, and more. Meditation and mantra aim to purify our bodies and souls of kleshas (obstacles), so that our true nature as satchidananda (truth/consciousness/joy) can shine ever brighter.
