Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Discussion | Curators: The Younger Than Jesus Effect

With: Alaina Claire Feldman, Rujeko Hockle, David Everitt Howe, Jenny Jaskey, Piper Marshall and Chris Wiley; moderated by Jovana Stokic. The global youth obsession is manifest throughout contemporary society, including the complex relations of novelty, celebrity, capital and youth in the art world and the curating of exhibitions. The New Museum's 2009 exhibition Younger Than Jesus was a prominent and influential example that further institutionalized what might be called the Younger Than Jesus Effect. This show turned the parameters of curating by age limit into a lively debate about talent and how it is recognized, nurtured, represented and distributed.

Talk | When the Mafia Ran Gay Nightlife in NYC

Before the Stonewall Rebellion in June 1969, the Mafia largely controlled the bars, liquor licenses, and clientele in NYC's gay and lesbian bars and clubs. The Mob had been openly doing this for decades, profiting on the people they could most easily control to maintain a tight grasp on gay nightlife in the city. Alex Hortis highlights this long-running exploitation in his new book "The Mob and The City: The Hidden History of How the Mafia Captured New York," which includes a discussion of "When the Mafia Ran Gay Nightlife." His presentation for the Second Tuesday Lecture Series will include a slide show of bars and queers, and video clips from pre-Hayes code Hollywood movies showing drag queens and gangsters in The Village.
