Park Walk | The High Line Tour

The area around the High Line Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to City markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the City to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park.

Opening Reception | Art Shows: Heidi Kumao / Shirley Steele

Heidi Kumao - Three works about surviving physical confinement are each inspired by the experiences of individual women including: a college student living under an authoritarian government, a Japanese-American girl relocated to a WWII internment camp, and the artist herself-constrained for months in a clam shell back brace. Shirley Steele - In these mixed-media paintings, gestural paint strokes and computer animation combine to explore a central tension of the information age, the human/machine relationship. Paint and programming join in a playful and reflective dialogue between hand and computer, between the irrational and the rational.

Opening Reception | Group Show: Irving Sandler: Out of 10th Street

10th Street in the 1950s had become a center of the cities’ burgeoning arts community. The surrounding area formed a social hub of studios and artist run cooperative galleries where Abstract Expressionism ruled the day. The critic and curator Irving Sandler was a key figure as a critic and friend to many artists as well as an employee of the influential Tanager gallery. Although known for his early championing of the Abstract Expressionists, he befriended a younger generation of artists that reacted against the rhetoric of gestural abstraction, the leading style of Tenth Street. Chief among Sandler’s core were Ronald Bladen, Mark di Suvero, Lois Dodd, Al Held, Alex Katz, Alice Neel, Philip Pearlstein and George Sugarman.

Opening Reception | Paintings: Johannes VanDerBeek's Early Hand

In his fourth solo exhibition with the gallery, Johannes VanDerBeek explores his interest in how the process of seeing and understanding is constantly evolving based on stages of human development. Following the birth of his daughter, VanDerBeek became fascinated with imagining how she was seeing the world without the pre-associations that language provides. In envisioning the frenzied mental landscape where things are experienced as phenomenon and how over time the perception of the external world is filled in with more specific information, the works in the show evoke different phases of resolution and visual representation.
