Fair | October 7th, 06:29AM: An Immersive Exhibition on Nova Music Festival Massacre

To celebrate the end of his two years of service as a medic in the Israel Defense Forces' paratrooper division, Tomer Meir joined 13 of his friends at the Nova Musica Festival on the weekend of October 6 in Re'im in southern Israel. It was his first ever music festival. "It was the best moments of my life. I can't explain the state we were in," the 21-year-old told the New York Jewish Week. "It was pure love -- people dancing, laughing, smiling. All the good stuff that we're living for." Until 6:29 a.m. on Saturday morning. The red alerts, the rockets and the running. "The music stopped. The rockets started. We started running for our lives," Meir said. Meir is a survivor of the Nova Music Festival Massacre, where Hamas militants killed 364 festival-goers and took at least 40 hotstages on the morning of Oct. 7. Six months after the attack, Meir is in New York sharing his story as part of an interactive exhibit about that day, which he says is helping him heal. The Nova Musical Festival exhibition, titled October 7th, 06:29AM, is an immersive step into what it was like to be at the festival when it was attacked. Screens show clips from the attack on Nova are displayed next to personal and camping items taken from the festival recreating the festival layout. The exhibit, which debuted in Tel Aviv for 10 weeks in December, was created by Israeli designers and cultural producers, many of whom were producers with the Nova Music Festival itself. It was brought to New York with the help of Scooter Braun, the Jewish-American music producer and philanthropist. The exhibit recreates the visuals and sounds of the Nova Music Festival massacre. But the New York version is in some ways "more intense," according to Yael Finkelstein, a volunteer who collected items from the Nova site and helped set up both the Tel Aviv and New York exhibit. New elements at the New York exhibit include dozens of video testimonies from survivors, Zaka volunteers and family members, as well as graphic raw footage taken on Oct. 7 from both festival-goers and Hamas militants. In addition, survivors of the massacre such as Meir and Sassi will be at the exhibit every day to share their stories and answer questions. Their goal, Meir said, is to show New Yorkers that the horror they experienced could happen to anyone.

Concert | Harp Concert at the Museum

Wander the museum while listening to the beautiful sounds of Jose Luis on the harp.   Jose Luis has been performing for over thirty years and is highly regarded as a gifted harpist by his peers. Jose Luis is the only harpist to play both the classic concert harp and the Latin lever harp; which requires him to pluck the strings with two different techniques; the first uses his fingertips and the second his nails. Jose Luis first fell in love with the sound of the harp and began studying in his early teens with Maestro Jose Serrano in Puerto Rico. He later visited Los Angeles to take private lessons with the world-renowned harpist and composer Alfredo Rolando Ortiz.

Festival | Super Sabado Block Party

Celebrate a day honoring the memories of ancestors, family traditions, and the power of women storytellers, inspired by the new exhibition, Amalia Mesa-Bains: Archeology of Memory, a retrospective by the pioneering artist, curator, and theorist. Born in 1943 to a Mexican immigrant family, Mesa-Bains is a leading figure in Chicanx art for nearly half a century, producing work that explores intersectional feminist themes, environmentally centered spirituality, and cultural diversity. Throughout the day, explore the exhibition with free gallery tours. The block party will be followed by a concert presented in collaboration with Carnegie Hall City Wide Concert Series at 4pm. As beneficiaries of jarocho culture and noteworthy performers with years of experience on both national and international stages, Caña Dulce y Caña Brava’s performances celebrate the music, poetry, dance and traditional attire of Veracruz, Mexico. The group stands out as an artistic project that highlights feminine poetry and voices, accompanied by traditional string instruments such as the harp and the jarana, percussion and zapateado.

Concert | Chamber Music and Conversation

Before his untimely passing, Talib Rasul Hakim (1940-88) was already becoming a widely influential composer, one who suffused his music for chamber and orchestral forces with intense deliberation, considered improvisations, dynamic rhythmic profiles, and purposeful silences. Hakim saw his compositions as more than just music: he saw music performance as the equivalent to an almost religious awakening. In the 1978 book The Black Composer Speaks, Hakim maintained, “It is hoped that whenever [my] music is performed, both performer and listener will experience some degree of inner stirring, that they will experience some philosophical, religious, political, emotional, intellectual experience.”  In this program, ICE and Either/Or present five diverse aspects of Hakim’s artistry that consider music as an encounter with the divine. The program includes performances of Psalm of Akhnaten; ca. 1365-1348 B.C. (1978), an imposing trio work that features a searching articulation of faith, mysticism, and spirituality; Currents (1967), his masterful entry to the string quartet canon; Scope-Seven (1965), an enigmatic solo piano work recently discovered; Four (1965) for quartet; and Music for Nine Players and Soprano Voice (1977), which features the combined forces of ICE and Either/Or performers. Following the performance, a panel discussion featuring three MacArthur “genius” composers—Courtney Bryan, Tyshawn Sorey, and George Lewis—will discuss the history and ongoing impact of Hakim’s work. Registration required.
