Play | A Picture of Autumn: Comedy, "the echoes of Chekhov are unmistakable" (virtual, streaming for 24 hours)

A Picture of Autumn made its debut on February 11, 1951 in a one-night 'try-out' performance presented by the Repertory Players, at the Duke of York's Theatre on London's West End. Despite promising reviews, the play was never picked up. Instead, N.C. Hunter enjoyed great success with his plays Waters of the Moon, A Day by the Sea and A Touch of the Sun, which dominated the West End throughout the fifties. Meanwhile, A Picture of Autumn gathered dust until this acclaimed production--the play's first in over 60 years. The streaming will be available until Jun 13th. By N.C. Hunter Directed by Gus Kaikkonen

Screening | The Sprezzaturameron: Artmaking in an Apocalypse (virtual)

A video docudrama from multimedia artists and musicians Tei Blow and Sean McElroy (Royal Osiris Karaoke Ensemble) follows two men who must confront the precarious nature of art-making in an apocalyptic near-future. As they gain awareness of their own privilege in a reforming world, the duo embarks on a vision quest to craft the perfect apology, inspired by the infamous apologists of the #MeToo era. Sprezzatura is an Italian word coined in the 16th century by Castiglione in The Book of the Courtier. It is defined as "a form of defensive irony: the ability to disguise what one really desires, feels, thinks, and means or intends behind a mask of apparent reticence and nonchalance." It is this irony, the mask of the courtier, that The Sprezzaturameron seeks to reveal. But what lies behind this mask? Staged Reading | Ben Jonson's Sejanus His Fall: Epic Tragedy (virtual)

First performed in 1603, the start of the Jacobean era, Ben Jonson’s tragedy of epic proportions is an incisive portrayal of political cronyism, sycophancy, and power. Tiberius is the Emperor of Rome. Sejanus is his right-hand man. But—in a society where books are burnt, “knowledge is made a capital offense,” and free men have become “the prey of greedy vultures and spies”—factions are forming behind each of these charismatic leaders. Jonson’s linguistically rich play has startling significance today in its exploration of treason and totalitarian tyranny. Sejanus sets his sight on Emperorship. No one can stop him. His fall is inevitable. Directed and Adapted by Nathan Winkelstein

Jazz | Lauren Lee: Vocalist, Pianist, Composer (virtual)

Lauren Lee is a forward-thinking vocalist, pianist, and composer based in New York City. Likened to female jazz pioneers that came before her like Carla Bley and Jen Shyu, Lee's music has been described as, "equal parts hip jazz, avant adventure, and... something completely different" (John Pietaro, Dissident Arts). Her work intentionally inhabits this place of "between", and in Lee's case, the "between" is nestled between where jazz has been and where jazz is going. Her work is praised for her virtuosic improvisational abilities on both piano and voice, as well as her emotional and harmonic prowess as a composer. Her third album as a leader, a solo record called The Queen of Cups, was released in April 2021 on ears and eyes records.
