Workshop | Learn the Art of Calligraphy

Professional designers of Bowne & Co. lead a special workshop that explores the art and historical methodologies of calligraphic writing.  In this workshop, you will learn the fundamentals of drawing Roman capitals (majuscule) and lowercase (minuscule) letters using a chisel tip calligraphy pen. Together, as the group gets hands-on exploring this ancient artform, you will investigate different historical methodologies of calligraphic writing and discover typographic anatomy—the shoulders, strokes, cross bars, ascenders, descenders that constitute letters—and then experiment making our own forms.  Anyone is welcome, and all supplies are included in the cost of the workshop. All participants get to take home whatever they create and their calligraphy pen to keep honing their skills.

Performance | Fragmented Hope: Feminist Drama

In the near future, the world is governed by authoritarian regimes that claim ownership over women's bodies. Children are raised by the nation, not by families, and women who refuse motherhood are sent to a remote training camp for correction. When a new group of women arrives and meets the women already in the camp, each carrying different languages, histories, and wounds, they quickly learn there is no way out. Their bodies are claimed by the nation, but their hope refuses to be erased. This is where the story begins. Written by Jing Wang.

Play | The Strange Disappearance of Cat Braun and Minnie Roy: Dark Comedy

On the night of their five-year anniversary broadcast, news anchors Cat Braun and Minnie Roy are interrupted mid-live broadcast and find themselves trapped inside their own studio. Without reason or explanation for such unusual activity, the pair slowly but surely succumb to layers and layers of fear and suspicion. Torn between what they can and can't (or shouldn't) say, this play is a dark comedy following two journalists that spiral out of reality while trying to make sense of it. Written by Deana Taheri and Stella Rea.

Book Discussion | Jounralist Eileen Stukane Shares Her Memoir, The House That Held Everything

Hear Eileen Stukane, author of The House That Held Everything, in conversation with Lani Steinberg, who wrote St. Luke's Thrift Shop: How Our Objects Tell Our Stories! The possessions of her departed relatives come alive in her hands, as author Eileen Stukane becomes a detective of the deceased in The House That Held Everything. In this first-person memoir, the author inherits the childhood home of a deceased cousin, and then opens a door to rooms filled wall to wall, floor to ceiling, with piled up items from years of secret hoarding, as well as from the disciplined collecting, of clocks, glassware, Asian porcelain, toy trains, and more. As she separates significant items from garbage, she peels apart and exposes the emotional underpinnings of hoarding, and makes sense of the difference between collecting and hoarding.

Poetry Reading | Lifelong New Yorker Harvey Waldman Shares His New Poetry Collection, Shopping Lists for the Apocalypse

Harvey Waldman, 76-year-old native New Yorker and Greenwich Village resident, will be presenting his first published book of poems, Shopping Lists for the Apocalypse. What sense is there in write shopping lists for the apocalypse? Perhaps the idea is not merely to be aware of looming dangers, but to prepare for the challenges that survival brings, an invitation to hope. The poems take the reader on a journey from the Bronx to Berkeley, Santa Monica to Greenwich Village, ultimately to life in Milano and on the Amalfi coast. There will be the lives, births and deaths of many family and friends along on the ride, but also with Charlie Manson and Harvey Weinstein.

Performance | The Love Suicide of Amijima: Modernized Japanese Bunraku Love Story (with Shadow Puppetry, Opera, Original Music, & More)

The Love Suicide at Amijima is a traditional Japanese Bunraku tale written in 1770s. It is a tragic forbidden love story between two people divided by moral rights and social hierarchy. This is not just a Japanese classical tale. It is a story about people. It is a tale about how humans are beautiful and ugly at the same time, that is the beauty of life. In this version, the classical tale will be told using the traditional methods and modern techniques. We believe that while respecting and preserving a historical depth of traditionalism, we can also still have fun, explore, and adapt with respect. Using shadow puppetry, opera, original composed music, and dances, there is unlimited fun you can have exploring these pieces. Written by Chikamatsu Monzaemon. Translated by Tomoka Takahashi.
