Conference | Anti-Colonialism, Black Radicalism, and Transnational Feminism

This conference will explore transnational Black feminism in the context of “third world” liberatory movements since the 1940s. At the height of struggles for anti-colonial independence in the African subcontinent and diasporic communities during the 1960s and 1970s, the praxis of Black feminist alliances proved to be foundational to global anti-racist and anti-imperial radicalism. We aim to consider how Black feminist solidarity was forged across a broader geopolitical frame that includes the Indian, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, strengthening local mobilizations and generating new transnational liberatory possibilities. We will also chronicle the evolution of transnational Black feminism since then, and how the shift from anti-colonialism to neoliberalism impacted the radical possibilities embedded in attempts at self-determination and collaboration across geographic divides.

Immerse yourself in the vibrant spirit of Holi at this community celebration! Holi originated on the Indian Subcontinent as a vibrant festival of colors, symbolizing the onset of Spring. Today, this joyous celebration has transcended borders and is embraced worldwide as a spirited way to welcome the season, promote inclusivity, and revel in playful and colorful festivities. The festivities commence at 11am aboard the 1885 tall ship, where you'll discover the culinary delights of Holi and savor a tasty treat. The celebration continues, featuring the Colors of Krishna's Love puppet show, which shares the history of Holi; interactive dance workshops and performances; and the iconic throwing of colorful pigments--the quintessential part of Holi. Book Discussion | Hitler's Oil Broker: Thomas Brown, Harbinger of Worldwide Conflict (online)

John Chapman's biography of Thomas Brown, who provided the template for a successful search by the German navy for oil access. Thomas Brown is an unknown figure of Scottish origin who played a significant role in the onset and development of both world wars in the first half of the 20th century. In the First World War he contributed to the Anglo-German conflict in the Middle East particularly in his switch from UK to German nationality in 1914 by contributing directly to the expansion of German imperialism in the Persian Gulf and Ottoman Empire. His most important role was in providing logistical support to German and Turkish forces in support of the Turkish jihad in November 1914. Despite his arrest by MI5 as a suspected traitor in 1919, he returned to Germany as a business middleman aided by former political and military colleagues in the Weimar Republic.

Video | Uncle!: An Experimental Reimaging of Purim (online thru Mar. 24)

To mark the holiday of Purim, a video document of the live performance of Sacha Yanow's Uncle! will be available to view. Uncle! is an experimental reimagining of the cultural tradition of the Purimspiel—the comic dramatization of the Book of Esther, performed in celebration of the Jewish holiday Purim. Through language, light, sound, and movement, Yanow shapeshifts in and out of a diasporic werewolf ancestor figure Uncle Mordechai, weaving together aspects of Purim, personal history, and the experiences of their actual uncle working as a pulmonologist during the initial decade of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. In a ritual portrait of intergenerational loneliness and longing that draws from Jewish incantation, Yiddish theater, and drag performance, Uncle! toggles the thin line between humor and grief, reframing the narrative of Purim and prompting us to consider its significance today in relation to anti-Zionist and queer lineages of care and resilience.
