Opening Reception | Sarah Crowner: Hot Light, Hard Light

An exhibition of new sculptures and paintings by Sarah Crowner, Hot Light, Hard Light is an installation conceived of by Crowner in her Brooklyn studio, where the perception of the form, shadow, and color of the works shifts constantly throughout the day in conjunction with the movement of the sun. Often edging their way toward monochromes, the abstract paintings—created by joining panels of painted and cut canvas—are rendered in assertive shades of orange, red, and magenta, interrupted here and there by moments of night-black and off-white. A series of new bronze sculptures sit atop pedestals painted in a shadowy blue-black; installed throughout the space their highly reflective and curved surfaces float somewhere between the potency of the paintings and the openness of the room.

Opening Reception | Karl Wirsum: Eye Adjustment: 1963-2020

A solo show of historic works by Karl Wirsum. The exhibition features over forty paintings, sculptures, and drawings made between 1963 and 2020.    Karl Wirsum (1939–2021) first came to prominence in the mid-1960s as one of the founding members of the Hairy Who and became known for his vividly colorful and “unabashedly figurative” work. Drawing inspiration from newspaper comic strips, advertisements, carnival sideshows, Mesoamerican pottery, and Japanese woodblock prints, Wirsum created a distinctly graphic style. As the artist described, “The flat color seems to clarify and accentuate the shapes and forms in a more abstract way, independent of what the shapes represent.” With fragments taken from the real world and riddled with word play, Wirsum’s work is defined by layered references both enigmatic and humorous. His process was one of recollection and invention, what the artist called “an image stream of ideas” pulled from his “memory bank.”   The works in the exhibition span Wirsum’s six-decade career. Early paintings include Memory Mask (1964), which evokes an advertisement for before and after dental reconstruction, and The Odd Awning Awed (1966), a deteriorating face informed by medical disease drawings rendered in bright, undulating patterns inspired by fabric awnings at a local amusement park. In later works, such as Fat Snowball’s Chance (2013), Wirsum depicts the idiom with a stylized Devil in an arctic landscape posing with a snowball perched on his shovel. Wirsum’s paintings on shaped panel, which he referred to as “flying cutouts,” elaborate kites, and paper mâché sculptures further animate the artist’s explorations of the body and activate the surrounding environment.

Opening Reception | Jamian Juliano-Villani: It

Juliano-Villani’s irreverent artistry is fueled by her obsession with consumer culture and social taboo, resulting in a mirage of distorted iconography. Augmenting this strategy with an awareness of representational painting’s history, she produces images derived from a personal archive of books, magazines, and photographs, as well as from online sources. Using acrylic, airbrush, and oil painting techniques, she incorporates fragments of her own writing and elements of the work of other artists such as Danish painter and sculptor Ovartaci (1894–1985). Juliano-Villani’s work also refers to cartoons, addressing racial, sexual, and social stereotypes through their mischievous wit and unsettling ambiguity. For her, these kinds of images are “democratic, based on impulse and speed; much like a sniper with a vision.”

Opening Reception | Sissòn: Waiting to Exhale

The exhibition is an exercise in breathing and birthing. Holding your breath suggests anticipation. But to wait to exhale is so much more loaded. The sensation is one of withholding more than anticipating. You want to dance, but only when you can do so with reckless abandon, without surveillance or interruption, or judgment. You want to live, but only on your terms. A real life, not a half life.
