The US premiere of Montréal-based choreographer Sylvain Émard’s Le Grand Continental. For its US premiere, Le Grand Continental brings together 200 New Yorkers of all ages and backgrounds to perform this joyful blend of line dancing and contemporary dance. All driven by the pure pleasure of movement, these passionate amateur dancers will have the place swinging to their energetic vibes. Concert | Country Music: Alabama Shakes / Diamond Rugs / Robert Ellis

The story of the Alabama Shakes (pictured) begins in a high school psychology class in Athens, Alabama when Brittany Howard approached Zac Cockrell and asked if he wanted to try making music together. Inspired by diverse artists such as James Brown, Otis Redding, Led Zeppelin and AC/DC, the band retained a sense of groove and space from their idols, along with a blistering force and emotion that simply couldn’t be learned. Eventually finding their way to a Nashville studio in 2011, they cut the song “You Ain’t Alone,” which helped launched the band. Diamond Rugs is a collaboration between members of Deer Tick, The Black Lips, Los Lobos, Dead Confederate and Six Finger Satellite. When John McCauley, the lead of Deer Tick decided he wanted to make another record during his downtime in his new home base of Nashville he decided to work with a number of friends and musical colleagues. What happened next was entirely unexpected; the musicians McCauley had recruited to play on his record, ended up contributing their own songs to the album and a fully-formed band emerged. The best of folks who write songs make you think about time, and Robert Ellis has the same ability. When he performs, the final hours of night race along in a sweaty, whisky-soaked blur. When he sits on a stool — with just his guitar, voice and songs — time slows down, as he spins tales of love and life and the way they twist together and are torn apart.

Concert | Manado, Manila and Manhattan: Music of Southeast Asia

Choral Spice from Indonesia by Manado State University Choir with Hidden Truths: Prayer for a Forgotten World by Electric Kulintang (Susie Ibarra and Roberto Rodriguez). This very special double bill explores the intersection of traditional and contemporary music through a Southeast Asian lens. The Manado State University Choir redefines choral and traditional music by creating cross-cultural and time-sensitive bridges. Traditional songs are transformed from simple melodies into lush, complex harmonies; traditional gestures form the basis for contemporary choreography, and Indonesian music from its many islands are collaged with Arab, African, and Western classical music. Led by an Indian conductor with a global orientation, MSUC re-imagines choral music as a contemporary convergence of cultures expressed in drama, dance and song. HiddenTruths: Prayer for a Forgotten World is a sound performance piece composed by Susie Ibarra that interpolates contemporary electro-acoustic music with field recordings of traditional artists from seven Philippine tribes.Hidden Truths will be performed in 5.1 surround sound by Electric Kulintang, which is Roberto Rodriguez on electronics, percussion and drums with Ibarra on electronic and acoustic kulintang (gongs). For this performance at St. Paul's Chapel, Ibarra and Rodriguez will be joined by visual artist Makoto Fujimura.
