Gallery Talk | Tour of Jubilation|Rumination: Life, Real and Imagined

Life is not lived in black and white: reality may have the tinge of dreams and dreams an air of reality. This provocative tension exists between the experiential nature of early American folk art and the fantastical imagery it often displays—between what is real and what is imagined. The same is true of the work of contemporary self-taught artists, which may introduce unique—and sometimes puzzling—expressions that illuminate the iconoclastic nature that is the flip side of the collective American psyche.

Concert | Traditional Bavarian Music with Zum Biergarten

Zum Biergarten formed over a decade ago playing annually at Oktoberfest at the most auspicious German bierhaus in America, Zum Schneider, on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Proprietor Sylvester Schneider is a direct descendant of the Schneider family, brewmasters and creators of the historically reknowned Schneiderweiss, and his Oktoberfest celebrations are the stuff of legend. Today, Zum Biergarten is in high demand at German culture and Oktoberfest celebrations all over the US, because everyone wants to party the way Sylvester Schneider parties! The band's repertoire consists of wonderfully authentic traditional music from a Bavarian publisher, provided to them directly by the Schneider family. They also perform polka favorites and fun, raise-the-roof contemporary rock and pop. Zum Biergarten will create a German party that you and your friends will be talking about for months afterward!

Dance Performance | Shandoah Goldman's 23 Skidoo, Site-Specific Choreography with More Than 50 Dancers

Shandoah Goldman is a Canadian-born, Brooklyn-based choreographer. Her practice fuses dance with location, live music, video & theatre. Since moving to NYC in 2009, she has presented her work at Ailey CitiGroup Theatre, S.L.A.M warehouse, The World Financial Center, Anita's Way, Spoke the Hub, Joyce Soho, as well as been an artist in resident at Art Omi & chashama. This large scale site-specific performance will involve more than 50 dancers! It is said that the ship-like shape of the building carved a windy slice in the New York Skyline which would blow women's dresses up in the early 1900's, exposing seldom seen legs and causing men to loiter and watch. Local authorities would say '23 Skidoo' to the men, which meant they better stop their gazing and get out while the getting was good. This project is at the heart of site-specific dance, where an architectural structure informs a narrative, a movement and a phenomenon. Start times at 5pm and 6pm.

Screening | Exceprts from Julian Schlossberg's Witnesses to the 20th Century

Julian Schlossberg, veteran film and Broadway theater producer had an idea. He would videotape all the influential figures who had shaped the Twentieth Century and weave these accounts into a decade by decade chronology as told by the history makers themselves. It was a race against time. These legends were, for the most part, well past 75. Schlossberg wanted to convince 150 of them to share their unique points of view. For several, this would turn out to be their last interview. Amazingly, Presidents, Generals, newscasters, ambassadors archbishops, Governors, Senators, Congressmen, journalists, authors, playwrights, cabinet members, actors, singers, architects and titans of industry all said yes..... Some agreed to 30 minutes and stayed for hours. To a person, they were candid and brought unexpected insight into the events that shaped the world that we live in today. Among the completed interviews are: Madeline Albright, Buzz Aldrin, Robert Altman, Kofi Annan, Lauren Bacall, Joan Baez, F. Lee Bailey, Sec. James Baker, Ben Bradlee, Tom Brokaw, Helen Gurley Brown, Pat Buchanan, Art Buchwald, William F. Buckley, Jr., George H.W Bush. Schlossberg has completed the first five 45-minute segments which include film clips, stills, archival footage and newsreels. These will be shown for the first time in New York City

Opening Reception | Group Exhibition: Love Me

A group exhibition featuring site specific installations, sculptures, and works on canvas created by Adam Bateman, Piper Brett, Michelle Carollo, Travis Childers, Alastair Levy and Hyungsub Shin. Their works demonstrate the varied effects manipulating the banal can achieve. All six artists give their found objects new fates, although that fate differs in its relationship to the object’s past. The objects- however transformed or static- have abandoned their usefulness, and instead ask to be appreciated in their new roles as anthropomorphic inhabitants, nostalgic triggers, poetic symbols, or mere artistic material.

Opening Reception | Mixed Media Works: Josh Faught's Longtime Companion

Faught employs marginalized materials and techniques, such as weaving and other traditional crafts, to explore marginalized feelings – the intersection of identity, desire, loss, ornamentation, sexual politics, and domesticity. Faught’s signature sculptural forms – loose, irregular hemp weaves, sagging, draped fabric, loofah-like burrows, pockets, frayed knots and webs – appear here in a new body of work that oscillates between suggesting threats and protecting against malice. Shown: "Calendar" 2012 Handwoven hemp, TV dinner brochures, cards from Mom and Grandmother, wind chimes, straw hat with lace, scrapbooking letters, felt, disaster blanket, and toilet paper on garden trellis, 96 x 48 x 3 inches

Opening Reception | Painting: Patrick Lundeen's Good For You Son

For his first New York City solo exhibition, Lundeen brings together seemingly disparate objects - from flags to rugs to posters to keyboards to grocery store dailies and magazine pages - into cohesive works resembling anthropomorphic masks. Neon-colored, kaleidoscopic patterns embellish six-foot tall cut out canvas masks, speaking to the artist's fascination with the exaggerated theatricality of Coney Island type characters, the Contemporary Macabre, and Outsider Art motifs. Borrowing from pop culture imagery and the neo-impressionists, the works hover between the humorous and sinister and the naïve and sardonic. Accompanying the exhibition is a 7" vinyl record by the artist's experimental three man rock band, The Oblique Mystique. Shown: "Three Headed Woman" / 2012 / Acrylic on linen with hair / 94 x 120 inches
