Dance Performance | Young Dancemakers Company, featuring Teen Performers from NYC Public Schools


Choreography created and performed by NYC teens selected from NYC public high schools. A company of 16 exuberant, ethnically diverse high school dancer/choreographers, under the watchful eye of director Alice Teirstein, will once again gather for the 16th year of Young Dancemakers Company, and perform their own works. Both themes and music are wide-ranging, usually covering subjects from love to war. In addition to their original dances, the group always learns a work by an established choreographer - Mark Morris, Merce Cunningham, and Bill T. Jones in past concerts. This year's participants are fortunate to learn and perform an excerpt from Jose Limon's "Psalm," taught by Mary Ford and Francisco Ruvalcaba. All performances end with the lively and popular "Dance With Us," in which audience members are invited onto the stage for some post-concert improvisation.

Workshop | Friday Evening Drumming Circle


Improvise on African, Latin and Caribbean rhythms at the drumming circle. The gatherings are led by master drummers MAGUETTE CAMARA, PETER HAWES, MARY KNYSH and PAMELA PATRICK. After beginning with the teaching of traditional drumming patterns, and establishing a steady heartbeat pulse, participants are then asked to contribute their own rhythmic patterns as part of a call-and-response chanting and drumming.

The year-long celebration of Nigeria’s 50th anniversary of independence that began last October continues here with a generation-bridging concert. Fronting his father Fela’s legendary band, SEUN KUTI is the living embodiment of afro-pop. FAAJI AGBA, whose lineup includes former members of the Afro-Skittles Band Fatai Rolling Dollar, Chief Seni Tejuoso, and Prince ‘Eji’ Oyewole, is Nigeria’s answer to the Buena Vista Social Club: a supergroup of veteran musicians who are re-popularizing faaji grooves, agidigbo blues, juju and other styles of Nigerian roots.

In this contemporary version of As You Like It, Frederick is a millionaire in the image of Hugh Hefner or Donald Trump. He believes money rules the day. Duke Senior and his followers, on the other hand, live a rustic, free-spirited life somewhere between the 1960’s hippies and the Hari Krishna followers.
