Author Reading | Julie Burstein discusses her book Spark: How Creativity Works, Inside the Minds of America’s Greatest Writers, Filmmakers, Musicians, and Artists

How did Richard Ford's cat influence his work as a novelist? How is Chuck Close's portraiture driven by his inability to remember faces? What pivotal moment helped Rosanne Cash understand the healing power of the stage? Creativity is an elusive subject. We enjoy its fruits—movies, novels, paintings, songs—but rarely are we privy to what happens in the creative process. The author traces the roots of some of the twenty-first century's most influential and creative thinkers, including Joyce Carol Oates, Yo-Yo Ma, Richard Serra, Isabel Allende and Mira Nair. She pulls back the curtain to reveal the sources of these artists' inspiration and the processes that bring their work into being.

Author Reading | Writers Stefan Merrill Block and Alison Espach read from their books

Inspired by elements of the lives of the author’s grandparents, The Storm at the Door is a haunting love story that shifts through time and reaches across generations. Along the way, Stefan Merrill Block stunningly illuminates an age–old truth: even if one’s daily life appears ordinary, one can still wage a silent, secret, extraordinary war. In her ruefully funny and wickedly perceptive debut novel, Alison Espach deftly dissects matters of the heart and captures the lives of children and adults as they come to terms with life, death, and love. Espach creates an irresistible chronicle of a modern young woman’s struggle to grow up. The Adults lays bare—in pitch perfect tone—a world where an adult and a child can so dangerously be mistaken for the same exact thing.
