Book Discussion | Ukraine's Patronal Democracy and the Russian Invasion: The Russia-Ukraine War, Volume One (in-person and online)

Authors Bálint Magyar and Bálint Madlovics discuss their new book. The Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 jeopardizes the country’s independence and its chances for Western-style development. However, the heroic attitude of the Ukrainian people, combined with a solidifying national identity, makes the domestic foundations for a western turn stronger than ever. After the invasion, building strong foundations of liberal democracy will be a top priority. In addition to alleviating immediate problems, the country must also address its post-communist legacy and the constraints of its oligarchic structures and patronal democracy.

Talk | Artist Talk: A Dystopian Vision (in-person and online)

Chris Dorland is a Canadian/American artist living and working in New York. Dorland’s work is a dystopian vision of the human-built world filtered through the sublimated violence of abstraction, consumerism and technology. Working with a variety of screens, scanners and drones, Dorland is interested in the ways in which machines increasingly perceive, record and reproduce the world through data visualisation, scanning hardware and other optical devices. Dorland moves between the scanning devices, screens and printers, allowing the various machines to document, distort and produce new images of the world which he then transforms into the language of painting. Dorland’s work is part of the collections of Whitney Museum of American Art, The Bronx Museum of Art, The Dennos Center Museum, Microsoft, Dawson College, Neuberger Museum, The Juilliard School of Art, The Langham, Chicago IL, The Sigg Art Foundation, SZ. Past exhibitions include the Front International, Cleveland Triennal for Contemporary Art ; Museum of Contemporary Digital Art (MOCDA); Super Dakota, Brussels ; Annka Kultys Gallery, London ; Lyles & King, New York ; Marc Selwyn Fine Art, Los Angeles.

Very few still exist in their original form; most are distant memories or have been altered to serve completely different functions - as residences, churches, event spaces, or empty lots. This is a Zoom tour with urban historian and educator Bradley Shaw, who will dive into the rich history of synagogues on the Lower East Side.

Lecture | Architecture and Everything (in-person and online)

At a time when our world seems to become increasingly ephemeral and artificial, with technology expanding the notion of digital representation, mediated perception of reality and self-generated content are the new normal. Immersive VR and deepfakes are nothing but a highly sophisticated simulacrum of our own desires. However, despite the enticing prospect of hyperreality, the real life --as mundane and conventional as ever--still happens out there. Forty years of iterations and reflections of architecture as urbanism, architecture as event, architecture as journalism, architecture as philosophy, architecture as parametric algorithms, and architecture as anything that is not architecture, has not stopped the rest of the world building (real) buildings. Reality is the ultimate thing architecture can still offer. Accepting and dealing with the real issues--ecological, political and social aspects of our contemporary condition--and providing physical space for everything that life in all its complexity presupposes, is finally the utmost responsibility of architecture and architects. This lecture will present recent OFFICE work, focusing on architectural form and materiality as a means for shaping our urban and social reality. Speaker Kersten Geers is an architect, writer and educator. Together with David Van Severen he is a founding partner of the Brussels-based architecture firm OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen.

Talk | Israel-Hamas War: Blowing Up Media Distortions

HonestReporting Canada (HRC) is hosting a thought-provoking Insider Briefing webinar - the first since Hamas' October 7 massacres - in an effort to separate facts from fiction. The program will feature a discussion between Lt.-Gen Aviv Kohavi, the immediate past chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) alongside Natasha Hausdorff, an international law expert, barrister in London, and a director of UK Lawyers for Israel. The discussion will be moderated by HRC Chairman Jonas Prince. HonestReporting was founded in October 2000 in response to controversy over the Tuvia Grossman photograph at the outbreak of the Second Intifada. In September 30, 2000, The New York Times, Associated Press and other major media outlets published a photo of a young man -- bloodied and battered -- crouching beneath a club-wielding Israeli policeman. The caption identified him as a Palestinian victim of recent riots -- with the clear implication that the Israeli soldier was the one who beat him. The victim's true identity was revealed when Dr. Aaron Grossman of Chicago sent the following letter to the Times: "Regarding your picture on page A5 of the Israeli soldier and the Palestinian on the Temple Mount -- that Palestinian is actually my son, Tuvia Grossman, a Jewish student from Chicago. He, and two of his friends, were pulled from their taxicab while traveling in Jerusalem, by a mob of Palestinian Arabs, and were severely beaten and stabbed. That picture could not have been taken on the Temple Mount because there are no gas stations on the Temple Mount and certainly none with Hebrew lettering, like the one clearly seen behind the Israeli soldier attempting to protect my son from the mob."
