Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 11 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Start times: 10:30am, 12pm, 1:30pm

Book Discussion | Red Orchestra: The Story of the Berlin Underground and the Circle of Friends Who Resisted Hitler (online)

A number of Germans objected to the Nazi Regime from the start.  But they faced a painful decision: whether to remain passive bystanders, or take a stand against the regime and oppose it from within. The Red Orchestra movement began to form in 1935, composed of professors, artists, and factory workers. When it was finally destroyed by the Gestapo in 1942, over 150 people were arrested, many of them executed. Half of the group were women. Anne Nelson's book Red Orchestra vividly describes the experience of these men and women--many working in defense of their Jewish friends and neighbors.

Lecture | “I Saw My Lord in the Form of a Beardless Youth”: Images of Devotion in a Mughal Princely Album

As a young prince, Dara Shikoh (1615–1659), heir to the Mughal throne, compiled an album for his fiancée, Nadira Banu Begum. The album celebrates the theme of union through various visual and literary metaphors, including the conspicuous presence of dervishes shown viewing princes and princesses in idyllic garden settings. In this talk, join Murad Khan Mumtaz, Assistant Professor, Williams College, to explore how depictions of Muslim ascetics in this album aided in constructing the courtly persona of Dara Shikoh as a locus of godly manifestation within Indo-Muslim devotional culture. Book Discussion | The Case of Cem: A Bulgarian Classic

Angel Rodel presents the first English-language translation of a twentieth-century Bulgarian classic, Vera Mutafchieva's sprawling novel of Ottoman court intrigue, emigration, and loss. Vera Mutafchieva's The Case of Cem, presented as a series of depositions by historical figures before a court, tells a straightforward tale: Upon the death of Ottoman Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror in 1481, his eldest son Bayezid takes the throne. However, discontented factions within the Ottoman army urge Mehmed's second son Cem, a well-educated and experienced warrior, to oppose his brother's ascension. Bayezid refuses, setting off a ruthless power struggle and forcing Cem into long years of exile, a pawn for European powers as they try to slow the Ottoman Empire's expansion.

Book Discussion | Resistance to Christianity: A Chronological Encyclopaedia of Heresy from the Beginning to the Eighteenth Century

Raoul Vaneigem's book is a revisionary account of the forms of thought and belief that have been rejected or suppressed by orthodox Christianity over the course of the centuries. Formidably erudite without ever drifting into dry scholasticism, Resistance to Christianity ranges from the origins of the Bible to the fraught doctrinal controversies of the fourth century to the Levellers and Jansenists of the early modern period, thereby revealing the too-little-known history that lies behind the modern world's theological horizons. Resistance to Christianity is far more, however, than a study of religious movements and ideas; indeed, Vaneigem is bracingly unapologetic in his ambition "to examine the resistance that the inclination to natural liberty has, for nearly twenty centuries, opposed to . . . Christian oppression." The story of how men and women have again and again resisted the authoritarian implications of religious orthodoxy is, above all, a crucial strand of the history of human freedom.

Lecture | Challenging China: The Philippine Experience in the South China Sea (online)

An obscure reef in the South China Sea has become the latest flashpoint in China’s long-running campaign to dominate the South China Sea. Since last summer, the Chinese Coast Guard has repeatedly employed water cannons, lasers, and acoustic weapons and rammed Philippine Navy and Coast Guard vessels to prevent them from resupplying military personnel positioned at Second Thomas Shoal. The US labels China’s actions as violations of international law and has confirmed that its mutual defense treaty with the Philippines extends to attacks on Philippine vessels at sea. Jay Batongbacal, a lawyer and professor at the University of the Philippines College of Law, will discuss how this tiny maritime feature became a potential conflict site, why a 2016 ruling by an international tribunal in the Philippines’ favor has not ended the dispute, and how international law can continue to be effective in the face of Chinese attacks. Peter Dutton, an adjunct professor of international law at NYU School of Law, will be the moderator.

Discussion | Public Education & NYC (online)

A conversation with Eva Moskowitz, the Founder and CEO of Success Academy Charter Schools, and 92NY CEO Seth Pinsky, exploring the state of public education in New York. The New York City public school system is the largest in the United States. More than 1.1 million students are taught in more than 1,700 public schools with a budget of nearly $25 billion. The pandemic led to an enrollment crisis, and the Governor recently announced an overhaul to the ways we educate children in New York. What do the current challenges tell us about the state of education in New York, and how are those mirrored across the country? Journalists Nicole Gelinas, Errol Louis, and Brigid Bergin will then bring their insightful perspectives to the table as they engage in a dynamic unpacking of the issues discussed. Together, they will explore current challenges to the public education system, and what innovation and investing in public education can mean for New York City.
