Talk | Rights, Wrongs and Distortion: Examining Human Rights Stances on Israel (online)

In the aftermath of the atrocities committed against Israelis on October 7th, a troubling pattern has emerged from the human rights community. Major human rights NGOs and leaders in the human rights community have largely failed to condemn the gross human rights violations perpetrated by Hamas against innocent Israeli men, women, and children. Not only that, but they have engaged in a sustained campaign to delegitimize the State of Israel and its defensive military operation, accusing it of committing 'genocide.' In doing so they have continued their abuse of international legal definitions and frameworks to validate anti-Israel bias. The silence of the human rights communities, in the face of the blatant human rights violations perpetrated by Hamas, calls for action. The demonization of Israel's defensive actions, using a distorted misrepresentation of international law, while the crimes of Hamas are rationalized and validated, requires a forceful rebuke. This briefing will bring together experts in the field of human rights and international law to shine a light on the glaring anti-Israel prejudice of human rights organizations and activists.

Opening Reception | Natalya Nesterova: The Creative Journey

This exhibition features a selection of paintings by the prominent artist Natalya Nesterova (1944-2022), which offers a glimpse into her creative process and celebrates her artistic journey. Drawing inspiration from a variety of sources, including French modernism and works of the primitivist painter Niko Pirosmanishvili, Nesterova painted in a realistic manner, combining elements of theater and fantasy. She enjoyed the process of painting, the interplay of dynamic intensity of colors, relief, layers, texture, and surface. Her paintings are contemplative and symbolic, not bound to a particular historical period. Nesterova enjoyed painting in solitude, with books and playing cards as her companions in the creative process. While working and living in New York, she enjoyed the company of her friends.

Lecture | Trauma, Privilege, and Adventure: Jewish Refugees Between 'Orient' and European Catastrophe (in-person and online)

Historian Atina Grossmann (Cooper Union) will examine the ambivalent, paradoxical, and diverse experiences, emotions, and memories of Jews who found refuge from National Socialism and the Holocaust in India and Iran after 1933. Always shadowed by the emerging European catastrophe, uprooted Jews were also precariously privileged as white Europeans in non-western, colonial or semi-colonial societies. An extensive collection of family correspondence and memorabilia extending from wartime Nazi Berlin throughout the global diaspora of German Jewry as well as archival, literary, visual, and oral history sources illuminates refugees' everyday lives in the changing context of interwar fascination and contact with the "Orient," global war against fascism, anti-colonial independence movements, and gradual revelations about the destruction of the European world they had escaped.
