Opening Reception | Cauleen Smith: The Wanda Coleman Songbook

This exhibition will feature the work of Los Angeles–based artist Cauleen Smith (b. 1967). The Wanda Coleman Songbook is an immersive video installation that enlists scent, sight, and sound to explore the multidimensional depth of poems by Wanda Coleman (1946–2013). Coleman was widely considered the unofficial poet laureate of Los Angeles, and her work guided Smith’s reacquaintance with the city after a sixteen-year absence. At the heart of The Wanda Coleman Songbook listening room, visitors are invited to drop a needle on the eponymously titled, limited-edition two-color vinyl 12-inch EP with commissioned contributions by Kelsey Lu, Shala Miller, moor mother and Aquiles Navarro, Meshell Ndegeocello, Jeff Parker and Ruby Parker, Alice Smith, and Jamila Woods and Standing on the Corner.

Opening Reception | Daniel Gibson: Big Sky

When nothing makes sense, there is the earth and the sky. A site for the body and a plane for the mind and the soul. While gravity tethers us to the first, it is often that we look up in search of the imagined – a dream, a memory of the dead, an answer to what’s next – but, generally, our gaze rests there where the two meet: At the horizon. It is from this anchor point that Big Sky, Daniel Gibson’s third solo exhibition with the gallery, spins off into a push and pull between the earthly and heavenly realms in a series of new sublime landscape paintings inspired by the high desert of the American Southwest. By way of a threefold use of the landscape - genre - as a carrier of personal narratives, art historical dialogue, and, in this body of work, as allegory with deeper conceptual underpinnings – Gibson ultimately grasps at the ontological and ephemeral passage of human life in relation to nature’s regenerative cycle.

Opening Reception | Sasha Ferré: Averno

Sasha Ferré does not see her paintings. Or at least she cannot see them when she is working: her hands are full of colours, she is fully immersed in the act of blending oils and caressing the material she handles. Sasha Ferré does not see her paintings, and yet she only works in the daytime as she craves natural light. From what she told me about her creative process, my understanding is that she performs a sort of daytime ritual which consists of coating the surface of a linen canvas with an initial layer of coloured tempera before covering the background with greasy pigmented matter. Issues of depth, and therefore dimensions, are already at stake. All of her work must take place in the space of a day - a rule dictated by the physical properties of oil paint, which also gives Sasha Ferré’s work a conceptual nature (the canvas as unity of time). Her ritual is soundtracked by music, and you can’t help but feel compelled to imagine what beats and melodies may have sounded across the studio while the artist was composing her latest works.

Lecture | The Culture of Commerce

Medieval bankers and merchants pioneered financial instruments that would be vital to the rise of modern global commerce. Commercial activities still in place today were routinely carried out, including bank transfers, the extension of credit, and the exchange of foreign currency. Even so, money was widely recognized as problematic within medieval culture. Focusing on some of the outstanding manuscripts, artworks and artifacts on display, this lecture by Deirdre Jackson, Assistant Curator of Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts, explores the ambivalence evoked by the burgeoning economy. The exhibition Medieval Money, Merchants, and Morality will be open at 5 pm for program attendees.

Poetry Reading | Celebrating Poe's Birthday: Reading of "The Raven and "Annabelle Lee" (online)

A celebration of Edgar Allan Poe's 215th birthday in which the masterful John Kevin Jones takes on the 19th century master of horror, performing "Annabelle Lee" and "The Raven" as Poe himself did at the literary salons of the period. We'll also present a preview of Killing an Evening with Edgar Allan Poe: Murder at the Merchant's House, which will return to the Merchant's House later this year. A live Q&A with Jones follows the performance. It will be a bone-chilling evening of irrational revenge, obsession and premeditated murder, dismemberment, and the very, very dark.

Discussion | A Look Back at Harlem's Glittering "Beaux Arts Ball"

Historian, cultural critic and author of Our Secret Society Tanisha Ford takes a trip back to the times of the influential Harlem socialite Mollie Moon and her fifty-year reign of the glittering "Beaux Arts Ball," a glamourous, interracial social event of New York Society which rivals today's Met Gala. Long overlooked, these events were effective fundraising efforts that supported the Civil Rights Movement, including luncheons, galas, card parties, traveling exhibitions, and fashion shows attended by middle-class and working-class Black families and leaders of industry. Dr. Tanisha Ford is the author of four books including the award-winning Liberated Threads: Black Women, Style, and the Global Politics of Soul. She has received numerous awards including being named one of The Root's 100 Most Influential African Americans. Currently, she is a Professor of History at The Graduate Center, CUNY. Beaux-Arts Ball Style is highly encouraged.

Discussion | New Year New Books Party 2024

Ring in the new year at the annual New Year New Books Party in New York City.   Gather in celebration and defense of the written word. The past year has continued to see alarming drives in legislatures, school districts, and communities nationwide to ban books that bring diversity and representation to our shelves. Stand against censorship and for the joys that literature brings to our lives. Celebrate alongside authors including Gina Chung, Jennifer Egan, Javier Fuentes, Aya Ghanameh, Kyle Dillon Hertz, Catherine Lacey, Ayana Mathis, and Gary Shteyngart. Toast favorite books from 2023, have poems from Ars Poetica written on the spot for your enjoyment, share exquisite small bites by PS Tailored Events, and engage in lively repartee. All allies of the literary community, including readers, writers, journalists, editors, agents, translators, publishers, and friends are warmly invited.
