Discussion | Artificial Intelligence for Climate Change Mitigation (online)

A discussion of how artificial intelligence (AI) can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. David Sandalow, lead author of the Artificial Intelligence for Climate Change Mitigation Roadmap, which was released earlier this month, will explore that topic along with seven of the report’s co-authors.  The report’s findings and recommendations include: -- AI could make significant contributions to climate change mitigation. Areas of opportunity include emissions monitoring, the power sector, the manufacturing sector, materials innovation, the food system, and road transport. -- Barriers to using AI to reduce greenhouse gas emissions include a lack of trained personnel and high-quality data. All institutions with a role in climate change mitigation should prioritize AI skills-development and explore ways to develop and share relevant data. -- Risks related to AI – including bias, privacy, and safety issues – require careful attention when using AI for climate mitigation. -- Greenhouse gas emissions from computing infrastructure for AI are currently modest. The amount of such emissions in the years ahead is very uncertain. -- The Artificial Intelligence for Climate Change Mitigation Roadmap is the 12th roadmap released as part of the ICEF Innovation Roadmap Project. Information on previous roadmaps can be found in this booklet. Speakers: -- Zhiyuan Fan, Research Associate, Center on Global Energy Policy  -- Julio Friedmann, Chief Scientist, Carbon Direct -- Antoine Halff, Chief Analyst and Co-Founder, Kayrros; Adjunct Senior Research Scholar, Center on Global Energy Policy -- Alp Kucukelbir, Chief Scientist, Fero Labs; Adjunct Professor of Computer Science -- Elena Méndez Leal, MIA Candidate at Columbia School of International and Public Affairs -- Colin McCormick, Adjunct Professor, Georgetown University; Chief Innovation Officer,  Carbon Direct -- Trishna Nagrani, Business Development, Climeworks

Opening Reception | Jennifer Guidi: Rituals

Rituals features a series of paintings that explore the sublime beauty of mountainscapes and the color spectrum. These carefully crafted compositions are not mere representations; they imagine elevated terrains inspired by the artist’s deep connection to nature and her personal and artistic rituals. Developed through repetitive actions and processes, each painting emerges as if from a meditative journey, manifested through Guidi’s investigations of color, form, texture, and material.

Book Discussion | Modest Homes: A New Monograph

On the occasion of the publication of Benjamin Hirte’s first monograph Modest Homes (Mousse, 2023), this is a panel discussion exploring the complex relationship between artists, architecture, and public spaces. The artist Benjamin Hirte will be in conversation with curator Jody Graf and art historian Pujan Karambeigi discussing key episodes such as modernist housing developments in the 1920s which sought to reimagine living spaces for the masses, urban interventions and guerrilla art actions in the 1960s-70s that challenged rules of public property, and the recent resurgence of iconoclasm that questions national symbols and histories displayed in municipal areas. Through these examples the panelists examine the evolving and often contradictory roles artists have taken on as they engage with public spaces: as engineers and architects designing new models of habitation, reimagining the aesthetics of urban environments, as poets and writers articulating new visions for the city, as enlighteners seeking to educate and protest social issues through public art, and as activists directly intervening in spaces to claim them for communities. The discussion will explore the scope and impact of these different artistic approaches, asking how and why one approach may be adopted over others for certain contexts and goals. It will also consider the challenges and opportunities artists currently face in utilizing or disrupting public spaces, and their capacity to meaningfully impact conflicts over how such spaces are defined and used.

Book Discussion | A Middle Eastern Pantry: Essential Ingredients for Classic and Contemporary Recipes (online)

Unlike most professional chefs, Lior Lev Sercarz does not wax lyrical about his grandmother’s culinary skills or the hours he spent cooking at his mother’s side. In fact, his childhood memories of the food on the kibbutz where he grew up in northern Israel are of bland, overcooked and mushy meals. Then he discovered flavor, the complex blend of tastes and smells both familiar and exotic — and found his calling, refined it in France, then served as Daniel Boulud’s sous chef before founding La Boîte, the New York-based global spice brand featuring single and crafted spice blends sourced from farmers and producers from around the world. In his new book, Lior applies what he’s learned by taking readers on a spice journey from Israel to Tunisia, Yemen, Turkey and beyond. It’s both a cultural travel guide, ingredient by ingredient, and a collection of recipes that will spice up your kitchen . . . and your life. Consider stewing lamb in verjuice, pressed from unripened grapes; whipping up creamy Turkish rice pudding; roasting vegetables electrified by the Egyptian nut-and-spice blend dukkah; or serving up snacks of kibbeh with pine nuts. The master spice blender will show you how! Lior Lev Sercarz joins us to extend his special brand of therapy to help you lose your fear of spicing up your culinary life; tell stories of the roasting, grinding and patience behind the exotic blends he creates in order to produce serious flavor; and offer approaches that can animate your palate

Book Discussion | Filterworld: How Algorithms Flattened Culture

From New Yorker staff writer Kyle Chayka comes a timely history and investigation of a world ruled by algorithms, which determine the shape of culture itself. From trendy restaurants to city grids, to TikTok and Netflix feeds the world round, algorithmic recommendations dictate our experiences and choices. The algorithm is present in the familiar neon signs and exposed brick of Internet cafes, be it in Nairobi or Portland, and the skeletal, modern furniture of Airbnbs in cities big and small. Over the last decade, this network of mathematically determined decisions has taken over, almost unnoticed—informing the songs we listen to, the friends with whom we stay in touch—as we’ve grown increasingly accustomed to our insipid new normal. This ever-tightening web woven by algorithms is called “Filterworld.” Kyle Chayka shows us how online and offline spaces alike have been engineered for seamless consumption, becoming a source of pervasive anxiety in the process. Users of technology have been forced to contend with data-driven equations that try to anticipate their desires—and often get them wrong. What results is a state of docility that allows tech companies to curtail human experiences—human lives—for profit. But to have our tastes, behaviors, and emotions governed by computers, while convenient, does nothing short of call the very notion of free will into question.
