Book Discussion | Limitarianism: The Case Against Extreme Wealth

Philosopher Ingrid Robeyns launches her new book, an original, bold, and convincing argument for a cap on wealth. How much money is too much? Is it ethical, and democratic, for an individual to amass a limitless amount of wealth, and then spend it however they choose? Many of us feel that the answer to that is no--but what can we do about it? Robeyns has long written and argued for the principle she calls "limitarianism"--or the need to limit extreme wealth. This idea is gaining momentum in the mainstream - with calls to "tax the rich" and slogans like "every billionaire is a policy failure"--but what does it mean in practice?

Book Discussion | Inverno: Waiting in Central Park

Cynthia Zarin's daring, heartbreaking novel is the book that J. D. Salinger's Franny Glass might have written a few decades into her adulthood. Caroline waited for fifteen minutes in the snow. After a little time had passed, she was simply waiting to see what would happen. It was entirely possible he would not come. If he did not come, she would be in a different story than the one she had imagined, but it was possible, she knew, to imagine anything. Inverno is a love story that stretches across decades. Inverno is also the story of Caroline, waiting in Central Park in a snowstorm for her phone to ring, yards from where, thirty years ago, Alastair, as a boy, hid in the trees. Will he call? Won't he? The story moves the way the mind does: years flash by in an instant--now we are in the perilous world of fairy tale, now stranded anew in childhood, with its sorrows and harsh words. Ever-present are the complicated negotiations of the heart.

Book Discussion | The MAGA Diaries: My Surreal Adventures Inside the Right-Wing (And How I Got Out) (online)

Journalist Tina Nguyen, national correspondent for Puck and former White House correspondent for Politco, in a conversation with CNN’s John Avlon about the alarming early days of the alt-right — and her new book. A former right-wing student activist and an early employee for Tucker Carlson at The Daily Caller, Nguyen saw the origins of MAGA up close — and it wasn’t pretty. Blowing the whistle on a movement whose only purpose is to triumph over the left — even if it meant sacrificing truth and democracy — Nguyen is uniquely adept at showing us how we arrived at the current state of American politics. Hear her discuss what she saw in this explosive account of the MAGA movement and its increasingly dangerous implications for our country.
