Opening Reception | Amy Brener: Servers

Entering the exhibition the viewer is met by large-scale hanging works, rendered in a variety of translucent hues: candy colors, ethereal pastels, earthen melange. Upon first glance, these objects resemble tapestries, kites and giant paper dolls. Each work possesses a distinct character and orbits its own compact universe. Their forms range from overtly figurative, to semi-architectural, to organic amorphism. Up close, each server has its own internal logic; objects are obsessively ordered in some and gesturally scattered across others. Both methods of placement lead to encrusted surfaces of Brener’s signature disposable knick-knacks: flossers, q-tips, straws, plastic cutlery, paper clips, junk electronics and other dollar-store miscellany. Dried plants and flowers flank or encircle these objects, as though commemorating them.

Opening Reception | Build what we hate. Destroy what we love.: 3 Artists on Venezuela's Displaced

As of October 2023, nearly 8 million Venezuelans have been forced to leave their homeland in the last decade. This displacement accounts for over a quarter of the country’s population, making it one of the largest migration crises in recorded history.  This show aims to amplify the stories of Venezuelan migrants through an exploration of social and material elements that make part of this massive exodus. The title emerges as a paradoxical interplay between the creation and dismantling of harmful systems (political, social, economic, belief…) and a reckoning of the nuances of everyday actions by everyday people, necessary to sustain what oppresses us, only to provide us with a fragile stability in return.  The exhibit brings together the work of 3 artists whose ideas about migration, belonging, and connection among an atomized nation give way to a visual repertoire of Venesporan contemporary realities. The works span photography, video, archival intervention, word-based installation, textile, and are accompanied by an array of contextual literature and personal testimonies that enrich the overarching narrative. Together, they navigate language and what the curator calls Objects of Embodied Memories, unraveling the bonds between material possessions and the emotional resonance that linger in their absence.

Opening Reception | Constanza Schaffner: Leones, Flores, Constanzas

An exhibition of new paintings by the Argentine, New York-based artist Constanza Schaffner. Schaffner is interested in the often-contradictory forces that reside within the individual psyche, and the tensions that can arise between poetic and rational approaches to understanding and experiencing the world. In her doctoral dissertation on comparative literature, she focuses on strategies to “re-enchant” the contemporary world, which she sees as largely disconnected from the mythical, the magical, and the sacred – an investigation that permeates her artistic practice as well.

Concert | Art und Weise: Raphaela Vogel & The Better People of Szechwan

Based on past music, Juliane Liebert, Daniel Roth, and Raphaela Vogel present new and existing lyrics and melodies for both ears. The performance will be interluded by an interview-style exchange between Raphaela Vogel and Elisa R. Linn. Raphaela Vogel and The Better People of Szechwan - that's Juliane Liebert, Daniel Roth, Raphaela Vogel and guests (Elisa R. Linn and Diedrich Diederichsen). They preserve the nearly lost work of the Jewish-German author Erich Hopp (Miss Germany Tango) and venture into the dubious humor of the of the end-punk band, Die Kassierer. In Procession 33b, they hiss outrageous chansons, clatter piano clusters, and reveal horrendous half-truths by and about grown-up men singing backwards, all accompanied by a harmonium and a large thunderous brass object (stolen from the Einsturzende Neubauten). Brutally pedagogic Brecht ballads and a waterproof world view give the band a unique status in Berlin's unsettled cultural life. Who else would you trust to sing the rhyme Amazon Should go Bankrupt to the tune of Urmel aus dem Eis? This performance and talk coincides with Raphaela Vogel's (ex-The Fistfuckers) New York debut at Petzel Gallery, featuring a poly-retrofuturistic temple of countless cameras referring to themes by Erich Hopp.

Concert | Mongolian Folk Music That's Also Modern and Unique

A bold fusion of Tuvan and Mongolian folk music, the trio Tuvergen Band, brings a modernistic and unique sound to the stage. Representing the Eastern members of Tuvergen Band ("galloping" in Mongolian), Tamir Hargana and Naizal Hargana--both playing the morin khuur or "horsehead fiddle" and providing vocals--originate from Inner Mongolia, while the ethnomusicologist and ex-Cirque du Soleil performer Brent Roman--on percussion and vocals--hails from Chicago. The group also employs the wild array of instrumental and vocal styles unique to the Central Asian steppe's sound palette, including the doshpuluur and tovshuur lutes, and the extraordinary, overtone-rich throat singing technique, khoomei. In tandem with Roman's introduction of the Australian didgeridoo and a hybrid drum kit of over twenty global instruments, Tuvergen Band plays what they call "modern nomadic music": incorporating bluegrass, blues, rock, and more into their repertoire of Mongolian and Tuvan folk songs and originals.
