Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 11 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Start times: 10:30am, 12pm, 1:30pm

Lecture | Holocaust Distortion in Poland and Beyond (online)

Since the beginning of this century, the commemoration and the history of the Holocaust were at the heart of political struggles in Poland. In order to defend the "good name of the nation," Polish authorities created institutions and legislated laws intended to enforce the official, state-approved version of history. This new narrative shifts the focus away from the Jewish victims of the Shoah and places it on righteous gentiles, real or imagined. It is within this context that old antisemitic tropes came alive and acquire new currency. This unprecedented, and state-sponsored, assault on the memory of the Shoah is known today as Holocaust distortion, a particularly insidious brand of Holocaust denial. In this lecture, Jan Grabowski will shed light on the origins of the current situation as well as its impact on Holocaust memory and Holocaust education in Poland, Europe, and beyond.

Discussion | Fighting Hate in Billings, Montana (online)

In 1993, Billings, Montana was impacted by antisemitism and racism when white supremacists moved to the town. On the evening of December 2, 1993, someone threw a brick through the window of a 5-year-old Jewish boy, Isaac Schnitzer, who was displaying a menorah. After the Schitzer home was vandalized, and inspired by the story of the Danish Rescue, the Billings Gazette printed a picture of a menorah that many in the town placed in their own windows to show solidarity with the Jewish community. This act fighting against hate received enormous attention and has become an example of how to stand up against prejudice. Margaret MacDonald, executive director of the Montana Association of Churches; Chuck Tooley, former Mayor of Billings; and Darrell Ehrlick, Editor-in-Chief of the Billings Gazette will be in conversation about the events of 1993 with Dr. Janice Cohn, author of The Christmas Menorahs: How a Town Fought Hate.

Concert | Sondheim in the City: Acclaimed Vocalist Celebrates Her New Album

After the critical triumph of her Sondheim Sublime album– called “the finest Sondheim recording ever made” by The Wall Street Journal – Melissa Errico returns to her favorite songwriter with an entirely new program of Sondheim songs, celebrating a new album and a different side of Sondheim. From the anthem of city busyness, “Another Hundred People,” to the bittersweet hymns of city marriage, “Sorry, Grateful” and “Good Thing Going”, with time for hard-boiled surprises like “Uptown, Downtown,” and surprisingly soft-centered ballads like “What More Do I Need? “ and “Dawn,” Errico will sound out New York as she rounds out her portrait of Sondheim—and, as always in an Errico show, there will be smart talk from this celebrated New York Times columnist to go along with her sublime singing. Musical direction by Tedd Firth. Melissa Errico's highly anticipated album, Sondheim in the City, will be released by Concord Records on February 16, 2024.

Book Club | The Accusation: Forbidden Stories from Inside North Korea by Bandi (in-person and online)

The Accusation is a deeply moving and eye-opening work of fiction that paints a powerful portrait of life under the North Korean regime. Set during the period of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il's leadership, the seven stories that make up The Accusation give voice to people living under this most bizarre and horrifying of dictatorships. The characters of these compelling stories come from a wide variety of backgrounds, from a young mother living among the elite in Pyongyang whose son misbehaves during a political rally, to a former Communist war hero who is deeply disillusioned with the intrusion of the Party into everything he holds dear, to a husband and father who is denied a travel permit and sneaks onto a train in order to visit his critically ill mother.

Book Discussion | The Lost Van Gogh: A Secret Self-Portrait

For years, in Jonathan Santlofer's novel, there have been whispers that, before his death, Van Gogh completed a final self-portrait. Curators and art historians have savored this rumor, hoping it could illuminate some of the troubled artist's many secrets, but even they have to concede that the missing painting is likely lost forever. But when Luke Perrone, artist and great-grandson of the man who stole the Mona Lisa, and Alexis Verde, daughter of a notorious art thief, discover what may be the missing portrait, they are drawn into a most epic art puzzles. When only days later the painting disappears again, they are reunited with INTERPOL agent John Washington Smith in a dangerous and deadly search that will not only expose secrets of the artist's last days but draws them into one of history's darkest eras.
