This year members of the Dance Research Fellowship, an annual cohort of dance scholars and artists invited to research a specific aspect of dance, focused their research on the theme of dance and ecology. Fellows Juli Brandano, Rosemary Candelario, Maria de los Angeles Rodriguez Jimenez, Lindsey Jones, Richard Move, and Rachna Nivas will deliver presentations of their findings in an annual symposium, culminating the work undertaken during a six-month fellowship cycle.

Lecture | Between the Living and the Dead: ‘Head and Hoof’ Burials in Context in the Ancient Caucasus
Ancient burial monuments filled with lavish grave goods are widespread across Eurasia. Alongside glittering gold and silver cups, bronze daggers, finely-wrought jewelry, and other precious objects, many ancient graves across the region also contain ‘head and hoof’ burials – the skulls and lower limbs of horses or other livestock. While most commonly associated with the royal burials of the Scythians and shamanic practices in Siberia, there is also a long regional tradition of these burials in the South Caucasus in the Bronze Age. This talk examines the ‘head and hoof’ burials in the Late Bronze Age South Caucasus in their local context, as part of the larger set of relations between humans and herd animals in life and in death. Speaker Hannah Chazin’s current research focuses on human-animal relationships in the ancient South Caucasus. She examines how human-herd animal relationships shaped political power and inequality in the past, and how these relationships can be investigated materially through archaeology. Her current book project, Live Stock and Dead Things, uses new archaeological interpretations of human-animal relations in the Late Bronze Age South Caucasus to pull apart the deep-seated narratives that seek the origins of contemporary forms of inequality and instrumental relations with nonhuman animals in the deeper past of animal domestication.

The story of Ray Charles, Ray received many accolades and nominations and was nominated in six categories at the 77th Academy Awards. For his performance, Jamie Foxx won the Academy Award for Best Actor as well as the Golden Globe, BAFTA, Screen Actors Guild, and Critics' Choice, becoming the second actor to win all five major lead actor awards for the same performance, and the only one to win the Golden Globe in the Musical or Comedy category, rather than in Drama. Directed by Taylor Hackford. 152 Min. Ray Charles was born in a poor predominantly black town in central Florida. He went blind at the age of 7. With the staunch support of his determined single mother, he developed a fierce resolve. He had wit and incredible talent which would eventually enable him to overcome not only Jim Crow racism and the cruel prejudices against the blind, but also discover his own sound which revolutionized American popular music. Eric Marlon Bishop, known professionally as Jamie Foxx, is an American actor, comedian, and singer. He became widely known for his portrayal of Ray Charles in the 2004 biographical film Ray, and that same year, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the crime film Collateral. Since 2017, Foxx has served as the host and executive producer of the Fox game show Beat Shazam. Foxx is also a Grammy Award-winning musician, producing four albums, which have charted in the top ten of the U.S. Billboard 200: Unpredictable (2005), which topped the chart, Intuition (2008), Best Night of My Life (2010), and Hollywood: A Story of a Dozen Roses (2015).

Discussion | What Makes a Good Short Story Good? (online)
A conversation with Maxim Osipov, moderated by Mark Lipovetsky. Maxim Osipov (b. 1963) is a Russian writer and cardiologist. In the early 1990s he was a research fellow at the University of California, San Francisco, before returning to Moscow, where he continued to practice medicine and also founded a publishing house that specialized in medical, musical, and theological texts. In 2005, while working at a local hospital in Tarusa, a small town ninety miles from Moscow, Osipov established a charitable foundation to ensure the hospital’s survival. Since 2007, he has published short stories, novellas, essays, and plays, and has won a number of literary prizes for his fiction. He has published six collections of prose, and his plays have been staged all across Russia. Osipov’s writings have been translated into more than a dozen languages. He lived in Tarusa up until February 2022, when he moved to Germany. Now he lives in Amsterdam and teaches Russian literature at Leiden University.

Opening Reception | Min KyeongAh: Contrasting East and West
Min KyeongAh was born in Seoul, South Korea. After graduating from Korea University, she studied fine arts at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts, and obtained her Master of Fine Arts degree at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, Massachusetts. During her time in Boston, Min was awarded the Robert Brooks Memorial Scholarship Award 1994 at Coply Society of Boston. In 2013, she obtained her Ph.D. for printmaking at Hongik University in Seoul, South Korea. Following graduation, Min taught in the Department of Printmaking at Hongik University as an adjunct professor for three years. Since her debut in 1999, Min has held twenty solo exhibitions.
