Slide Lecture | Fanny Brice - The Consummate Performer! (virtual)

You may remember Fanny Brice as the creator and star of the top-rated radio comedy series The Baby Snooks Show, or you may know her only from Barbara Streisand’s portrayal in “Funny Girl”, but she was a popular and influential American comedienne, singer, theatre and film actress, who made many stage, radio and film appearances. She could do it all: sing, dance, act, and most especially make you laugh. Fanny started in burlesque and wound up as one of the most famous performers of her time. Despite her efforts to succeed as a serious actress and singer, Brice –who spoke no Yiddish – rose to stardom performing comedy with a Yiddish accent. Telling the tale of this storied woman will be historian Dr. Sharon Keller.

Discussion | Jews and Chinese Food: A Christmas Love Story (virtual)

It’s well known that Jews have long had a love affair with Chinese food. In fact, for many Jewish families, the tradition of eating Chinese food on Christmas is almost as sacrosanct as avoiding leavened bread on Passover or eating latkes during Hanukkah. Is there a more deeply rooted historical and cultural connection for this tradition or does the Christmas ritual simply come from the fact that Chinese restaurants are open during Christian holidays? Join Museum of Food and Drink and Gefilteria co-founder Jeffrey Yoskowitz, journalist Hanna Raskin, cookbook author Grace Young, writer and producer Jennifer 8 Lee, and filmmaker Cheuk Kwan for a conversation that traces the origins of this cross-cultural Christmas love story

Discussion | Moulin Rouge! The Musical: Broadway Cast in Conversation (virtual)

Tony Award winner Karen Olivo, Aaron Tveit, Danny Burstein, Sahr Ngaujah, and Robyn Hurder—stars of the Broadway smash Moulin Rouge! The Musical— will take you for a behind-the-scenes look at the show that’s been nominated for 14 Tony Awards including Best Musical and individual performer nominations for each of the panelists. How have they adapted the characters of Baz Luhrmann’s revolutionary film for the stage? How do they manage to tell an intimate love story in the context of the most lavish, eye-popping and transportive production ever to hit Broadway? How on earth do they perform over 70 songs that celebrate some of the greatest popular music of the last 50 years? And how do the central themes of the show—the celebration of artists and the struggles that face them—resonate now more than ever while Broadway is currently dark?
