A Christmas Carol in Harlem places Ebenezer Scrooge as a real estate mogul who has made his fortune at the expense of others. Scrooge foregoes using his wealth to affect positive change within his Harlem community and instead lives a life of miserly solitude. That is until three unexpected visitors arrive on Christmas Eve to show him that the value of family and the impact of cooperation will lead to a healthy, thriving and prosperous community. Composer Gabriela Lena Frank creates "high-spirited pieces full of vibrant colors, slicing rhythms and volatile textures that contract, swell and warp" – New York Times Featuring choreography and performance by dancer Irene Rodríguez, it takes inspiration from the assassination of poet Federico García Lorca at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. The Five Moons of Lorca conveys the beauty of García Lorca’s life as well as its tragic end, while serving as a commentary for the dangers of political and cultural intolerance. "Open 'Tho Shut" is a weekly series of free, live walk-by performances in which acts will be staged live in the theater's set shop for audiences of socially distanced passers-by. Dec 19th event will entirely be a participatory audience sing-along of well-known Christmas Carols: "Jingle Bells," "Deck the Halls," "O Hanukkah," "White Christmas," "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and more. The show is intended to recreate the family fun of the annual Tompkins Square Christmas Tree lighting ceremony, which is canceled this year. Sheet music will be distributed to all participants. Even though the sing-along will be outside, masks will be required and social distancing will be observed.
