Reading | Writers Read: Reina María Rodríguez / Kristin Dykstra


Reina María Rodríguez was born in 1952 in Havana, Cuba. In 2014 she won Chile´s Pablo Neruda Ibero-American Prize for Poetry; she won Cuba's National Literature Prize for 2013. Now the author of more than 30 books, Rodríguez first emerged onto the national scene with a Julián del Casal prize in 1980, awarded for Cuando una mujer no duerme (When a Woman Isn't Sleeping). Kristin Dykstra's translation of Other Letters to Milena, by Reina María Rodríguez, was published by the University of Alabama Press in December 2014. Two more of her translations of contemporary Cuban literature are forthcoming from UAP in 2015: Breach of Trust, by Ángel Escobar; and The Counterpunch (And Other Horizontal Poems), by Juan Carlos Flores. She won the 2014 Gulf Coast Prize for Literary Translation.

Deranger reveals how the tar sands have impacted the people, culture, and land of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, a community situated on Lake Athabasca about 150 miles downstream of the Alberta Oil Sands project, and underscores the central role of Indigenous resistance to ongoing state extraction in the climate justice movement as a whole. Dance Performance | Experiencing the World of Japanese Noh Theater Dance


One of the first women to act as a lead shite performer in a traditional Noh lineage, Hisa Uzawa is a prominent member of the Tessenkai branch of the Kanze School of Noh theater. She has been designated as a “cultural treasure” by the Japanese government. In their New York debut, she and her daughter Hikaru will introduce the dynamics and techniques of the six-hundred-fifty year tradition of dance that lies at the heart of the Noh theater. The Uzawas will perform climactic dance sequences from four major plays and present behind-the-scenes details of costume and choreography. An intimate glimpse of one of the world’s major dance traditions.

Jazz | Cyrille Aimée, French Jazz Singer


As a child growing up in rural France, jazz singer Cyrille Aimée was captivated by the music of gypsies and would sneak out of her house to join them in song. Gypsy swing is only one part of the spunky, bright-toned French-Dominican songstress’s repertoire, which now includes Brazilian songs and classic jazz standards. A winner of the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, The Wall Street Journal has called Aimée “one of the most promising jazz singers of her generation.”

Performed by the Barnard-Columbia Chorus. The St Matthew Passion BWV 244 is a sacred oratorio composed by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1727 for solo voices, double choir, and double orchestra, upon a text written by Picander (Christian Friedrich Henrici). The Passion sets chapters 26 and 27 of the Gospel of St. Matthew to what is widely regarded as one of the masterpieces of classical sacred music.
