Ann Jefferson will discuss her recent work on genius in France. Child prodigies are a recurrent feature of the literature on genius, which records the many occasions on which the exceptional talents of children have been held up for exhibition. When the prodigy is incited to become a performer, the effect is both to confirm and to question the assumptions we hold about the nature of genius itself. Ann Jefferson is professor of French literature at the University of Oxford and fellow and tutor in French at New College, Oxford. Her books include Reading Realism in Stendhal and Biography and the Question of Literature in France and most recently, Genius in France: An Idea and its Uses.

Dorian Devins is a New York City-based jazz vocalist and lyricist. She has studied music theory and voice, and comes to performance from a lifetime of involvement with music filtered through a diverse background. Her repertoire includes many jazz vocal standards, bossa nova and Latin tunes, as well as jazz instrumental standards with her original lyrics. To date, she has written lyrics to over 3 dozen jazz standards, including one cowriting credit with Wayne Shorter.
