The area around the High Line Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to City markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the City to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park.

Concert | Marcel Perez: International Silent Comedian Rediscovered


Probably the greatest silent comedian you've never heard of is Marcel Perez. Part of the first generation of screen clowns, his career began in Paris in 1900 and flourished until 1928. During that time, Perez helped create the ground rules for the genre in Europe and continued to refine the basics in the United States. An international favorite, Perez was along with Max Linder one of the few direct links between European and American silent comedy, and made more than 200 shorts. This evening of rare Marcel Perez comedies is selected from the DVD The Marcel Perez Collection, curated by Ben Model and Steve Massa, and produced by Model in cooperation with the Library of Congress. The program will be introduced by Steve Massa and have musical accompaniment by Ben Model.

Opening Reception | Photography: Tseng Kwong Chi's Performing for the Camera


The first major museum retrospective of works by Tseng Kwong Chi (1950-1990), a prolific artist and key documentarian of Manhattan’s downtown scene in the 1980s. The exhibition features over 80 photo-based works alongside archival materials by the Hong Kong-born Canadian artist who died in 1990 at the age of 39 from AIDS-related complications.

The sixth and final Adventure in Italian Opera with Fred Plotkin of this season will feature tenor Piotr Beczala, who has sung opening nights at the Met, La Scala and many leading opera houses. He will be appearing in a new production of Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta at the Met and then sing Gustavo III in Un Ballo in Maschera there for his first New York performances of the role.

Talk | The Lowline: A Proposed Underground Park


The Lowline is a plan to use innovative solar technology to illuminate the one-acre former Williamsburg Bridge Trolley Terminal, just below Delancey Street. The result will be a stunning underground park, providing a beautiful respite and a cultural attraction in one of the world’s most dense, exciting urban environments. The site was opened in 1908 for trolley passengers, but has been unused since 1948. Speaker James Ramsey, Co-Founder and Creator, is the inventor of the remote skylight, which delivers sunlight below ground using a system of optics. In 2004, Ramsey opened design practice RAAD, and they have since built over a hundred projects, both in NYC and across the country.

Author Reading | Catherine Hiller reads from her book Just Say Yes


Among the first marijuana memoirs ever published, Just Say Yes is an unusual book about drug dependence: the author celebrates and does not regret her 50 years of smoking weed. Novelist, editor, PhD and mother of three, Hiller describes climbing filthy tenement stairs in NYC to get her bi-monthly supply, giving advice about grass to an octogenarian couple, going to the Burning Man festival, filming Paul Bowles, smoking pot in the Caribbean, interviewing John Updike about marijuana, and being part of the film crew at Woodstock. With ruthless honestly she observes marijuana's effect upon every aspect of her life: marriage, motherhood, friendship, work, sex.

Poetry Reading | Poetry: Olena Kalytiak Davis / Morgan Parker


Olena Kalytiak Davis is the author of four poetry collections, most recently, The Poem She Didn't Write And Other Poems (2014), which was a 2014 Lannan Literary Selection. Her first book, And Her Soul Out Of Nothing, won the Brittingham Prize. Her second book, shattered sonnets love cards and other off and back handed importunities (2003), was recently republished by Copper Canyon Press (2014). Morgan Parker is the author of Other People's Comfort Keeps Me Up At Night (Switchback Books 2015), selected by Eileen Myles for the 2013 Gatewood Prize, and There Are More Beautiful Things Than Beyoncé (Coconut Books 2016). Her poetry and essays have been featured in numerous publications as well as anthologized in Why I Am Not a Painter (Argos Books) and The BreakBeat Poets: New American Poetry in the Age of Hip-Hop (forthcoming, Haymarket Books). A Cave Canem fellow and poetry editor for Coconut Magazine, she also contributes writing to Weird Sister and co-curates the Poets With Attitude (PWA) reading series with Tommy Pico. She lives in Brooklyn.
