Concert | Connecticut Little Symphony performs Beethoven's Quintet for Piano and Winds


The Connecticut Little Symphony came about as a result of many factors, not the least of which was how to address the eight-hundred-pound symphonic gorilla in the room; that is to say, the unwieldy nature of a symphony orchestra with its seventy-plus players, and the limitations placed on such an organization that requires not only enormous funds to operate, but large concert halls and a dedicated list of subscribers and donors. The thought was to form a core group of musicians for the purpose of performing classical chamber works, while keeping the ensemble portable enough to enable it to play in venues such as churches and libraries. They have been in existence since 2011.

Opening Reception | Sketches: Jonathan Andrews' Drawn to the Edge


This project celebrates the rich culture and architecture, and the generous, industrious people of the Middle East. At the same time it depicts the rampant, large-scale unravelling of infrastructure and society – and of the global heritage that belongs to us all. Founded in the sketch books and travel journals of a humanitarian worker in the Middle East, the exhibition presents the evolution of Jon’s work in Syria during a rapid deterioration in the conflict. He, himself, is drawn to an edge, forced to make decisions that impact on his family and profession. The exhibition will feature selected sketches from the artist's journals and some larger pieces commenced in Syria and completed with support from the Art Students League of New York.

To explore the connections and disconnects, this event will bring together a distinguished panel, including Joanna Coles, award-winning journalist and editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan; Dayle Haddon, former top model and founder and CEO of WomenOne; Dr. Rhoda Narins ’62, cosmetic dermatologist and clinical professor at NYU Langone Medical Center; and Naomi Wolf, bestselling author of The Beauty Myth. They'll discuss how our ideas and ideals change over time and how feminism and gender are linked to our feelings about how we look and how we age.

Poetry Reading | Readings in Contemporary Poetry: Peter Gizzi / Franck André Jamme


Franck André Jamme has published numerous volumes of lyric and concrete poetry as well as collaborative works with artists, such as James Brown, Suzan Frecon, Jaume Plensa, and Jan Voss. He was awarded the 2005 Grand Prix de Poésie from the Société des gens de Lettres and is the editor of the 1983 Pléiade edition of the complete works of René Char. Peter Gizzi is the author of six poetry collections, including Threshold Songs (2011) and The Outernationale (2007), and numerous chapbooks and artist books. He recently published a retrospective volume titled In Defense of Nothing: Selected Poems, 1987–2011 (2014).

Lecture | David Wojnarowicz's Little Known 'Magic Box'


The artist David Wojnarowicz, who died in 1992, left behind an amazing body of art. But after his death, one unknown work was discovered under his bed: the "Magic Box." It's a collection of unexplained objects that make up a private world we still don't fully understand. Hugh Ryan and Matthew Leifheit will present their fascinating study on noted artist David Wojnarowicz and his "Magic Box." Hugh Ryan is a freelance writer and the founding director of the Pop-Up Museum of Queer History, through which he has organized exhibitions in queer communities around the country. Matthew Leifheit is Photo Editor of VICE Magazine, where some of the original images of the "Magic Box" appeared.

Roman Díaz is a master percussionist from Havana, where he was trained by elders in the fine arts of classic Afro-Cuban musical traditions. The project was started by Gerhard Fluch, principal trumpet in the Bruckner Orchestra Linz, and has successfully held guest performances at the University of Connecticut, the Outreach Jazz Festival in Tyrol, Austria, and in the Brucknerhaus Linz. Praised as “a fabulous event with brilliant virtuosos,” trump@art gives insight into the vital contemporary music scene in Austria. The program includes outstanding compositional achievements by established composers as well as newcomers.
