Discussion | Playwrights & Theater Experts Share about Politcial Theater

Explore the questions: What is the role of political theater today? Can art still change how we think and act in the world? Can theater instigate awareness—or even action—in an era of overlapping crises? Or has political theater lost its force in a time when politics itself is saturated with performance and spectacle? Playwrights Doug Wright and J.T. Rogers, stage director Bartlett Sher, and James Nicola, former artistic director of the New York Theater Workshop, will discuss these ideas.

Book Discussion | Award-Winning Author Rebecca Lehmann Shares Her New Novel, The Beheading Game (In Person AND Online!)

Award-winning author Rebecca Lehmann joins a conversation about her debut novel, The Beheading Game–an audacious, feminist take on British royal history that imagines what would happen if Anne Boleyn woke up after her execution and set out on a quest for vengeance–with fellow writer Anna Solomon (The Book of V.). A fantastical journey through the wilds of England and Tudor history, filled with danger and magic and steeped in Arthurian legend, The Beheading Game is a prescient reminder that “mouthy” women have always been punished. Now, thanks to debut novelist Rebecca Lehmann, nearly five hundred years after Anne Boleyn’s death, one of history’s most maligned women finally has the chance to tell her story.

Book Discussion | Scholar Shares the New Edition of Her Book, Fashion under Fascism

At this talk, author and scholar Eugenia Paulicelli will be in discussion with Francesca Granata, Parsons School of Design, about her book, Fashion under Fascism. In Fashion under Fascism, Paulicelli explores the subtle yet sinister changes to the seemingly innocuous practices of everyday dress and shows why they were such a concern for the state. Importantly, she also demonstrates how these developments impacted on the global dominance of Italian fashion today. Alongside interviews with major designers, such as Fernanda Gattinoni and Micol Fontana, this newly expanded revised edition of the book includes updated material on gender and masculinity, the role of uniforms in standardizing individuality, race and colonial Italy, and the reception of 1930s cinema. It sheds new light on the complicated relationship between style and politics and is an essential read for all those interested in the history of fashion, politics, national identity and the culture of fascism.

Nuclear Hallucinations is a film that claims to be a documentary, centered around the anti-nuclear struggle against the Kudankulam Atomic Power Project in South India. In a context where cases of sedition and waging of war against the state are filed against anti-nuclear protesters, the film attempts to question the totalitarian nature of pro-nuclear assertions through comic modes. Satirical impersonations, performance, and ironic renderings of jingoistic rhetoric work together to form a narrative that explores the tragic absurdity of constructing nuclear power plants on a tsunami-affected coast. Director: Fathima Nizaruddin Followed by a Zoom Q&A with the director.
