Concert | Piano in the Park: Eclectic Jazz

A five, six, seven, eight... Come on down and swing along to the best jazz the Big Apple has to offer with this special performance. An eclectic musician of Armenian origin, Armen Donelian has appeared internationally as a pianist, composer, and bandleader since 1975. He has worked with many of the "greats" including Sonny Rollins, Mongo Santamaria, Chet Baker, Paquito D'Rivera, Jackie Paris, Billy Harper and Night Ark. His piano playing reveals a masterful command rooted in classical and jazz studies, clean articulation, a deft swinging touch, access to a broad dynamic spectrum, a virtuosic harmonic vocabulary, and a boundless source of creative ideas. Armen is also a Fulbright Scholar, educator, author and producer of 14 acclaimed recordings. "Those who still believe that jazz is a down-and-dirty genre of music must cast their ears toward Armen Donelian, who, with his original music and arrangements of the scores of others, brings a serene sense of dignity and elegance to every measure." - Richard Houdek, The Berkshire Eagle (Pittsfield CityJazz Festival)

Author Reading | Learning about the New Jewish School of Music with Researcher & Author (Online!)

The history of the “New Jewish School of Music” began when several music students from the St. Petersburg Conservatory founded the Society for Jewish Folk Music in St. Petersburg in 1908. The end of this movement came with the 1938 invasion of Austria by Germany and the dissolution of the Viennese Society for the Promotion of Jewish Music that same year. The fascinating and dramatic history of the New Jewish School is the subject of From St. Petersburg to Vienna: The New Jewish School in Music (1908-1938) As Part of the Jewish Cultural Renaissance by Jascha Nemtsov. While many other national "schools" of music—such as the Russian, Czech, and Hungarian—were able to develop freely and establish themselves in an environment of cultural transparency, the Jewish school was violently suppressed. From St. Petersburg to Vienna was first published in 2004 in German, focusing on the reconstruction of the Jewish school’s historical development in Russia and, after 1917, increasingly in other Eastern and Central European countries. Attend a discussion with Nemtsov about this recently-revised and translated edition of the book.

Gallery Talk | Exploring European Porcelain through a Feminist Lens

Hear new insights and untold stories and take a closer look at the works of art. You’ll also have the opportunity to ask questions. Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Monstrous Beauty: A Feminist Revision of Chinoiserie. This exhibit radically reimagines the story of European porcelain through a feminist lens. When porcelain arrived in early modern Europe from China, it led to the rise of chinoiserie, a decorative style that encompassed Europe’s fantasies of the East and fixations on the exotic, along with new ideas about women, sexuality, and race. This exhibition explores how this fragile material shaped both European women’s identities and racial and cultural stereotypes around Asian women. Shattering the illusion of chinoiserie as a neutral, harmless fantasy, Monstrous Beauty adopts a critical glance at the historical style and its afterlives, recasting negative terms through a lens of female empowerment. Note: Space is limited; first come, first served. Priority will be given to those who register.

Opening Reception | Sherrill Roland: The Turning Away From

In this powerful solo exhibition, interdisciplinary artist Sherrill Roland delves into the psychological toll of incarceration through sculptural works that reflect the extremes of life “inside”—from intimacy and isolation to institutional control and emotional estrangement. A recipient of the 2025 USA Fellowship and numerous national awards, Roland has exhibited widely at major institutions including the Hammer Museum, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and the Nasher Museum of Art. His work is held in public collections across the U.S. and continues to challenge viewers to confront the human cost of the American criminal justice system.

Author Reading | Cartoonist Guy Delisle Discusses His New Book

Critically-acclaimed cartoonist Guy Delisle provides a conversation about his latest engrossing foray into nonfiction, Muyridge, with fellow artist Sarah Glidden. Critically-acclaimed cartoonist Guy Delisle (Pyongyang, Hostage) returns with another engrossing foray into nonfiction: a biography about Eadweard Muydbridge, the man whomade pictures move. Despite career breakthrough after career breakthrough, Muybridge would only be hampered by betrayal, intrigue, and tragedy. Delisle’s keen eye for details that often go unnoticed in search of a broader emotional truth brings this historical figure and those around him to life through an uncompromising lens. Translated from the French by Helge Dascher & Rob Aspinall, Muybridge turns a spotlight on what lives in the shadow of an individual’s ambition for greatness, and proves that Eadweard Muybridge deserves to be far more than just another historical footnote. Guy Delisle spent ten years working in animation, which allowed him to learn about movement and drawing. He is best known for his travelogues about life in faraway countries, Burma Chronicles, Jerusalem: Chronicles from the Holy City, Pyongyang, and Shenzhen. In 2012, Guy Delisle was awarded the Prize for Best Album for the French edition of Jerusalem at the Angoulême International Comics Festival.

Play | Shakespeare's All's Well That Ends Well in the Park

"This is the way Shakespeare wrote his plays to be seen." -The Huffington Post Get swept up in one of Shakespeare's boldest romantic comedies with New York Classical Theatre! Written around 1604, All's Well That Ends Well is one of Shakespeare's boldest romantic comedies. When Helena--a brilliant, determined young woman--heals a king, she earns the right to choose her husband. But love isn't so simple, and she must use wit, courage, and a daring plan to win the life she desires. Full of humor, heart, and twists, this rarely performed gem is a story of love on Helena's terms. New York Classical Theatre's signature style, Panoramic Theatre, turns public spaces into the world of the play. Instead of sitting in one place, the audience moves with the actors from scene to scene, following the action as it unfolds. This immersive approach creates a dynamic, interactive experience where every performance is shaped by its surroundings.

Classical Music | Boundary-Breaking Baroque Collective Performs Handel and More

The iconoclastic Brooklyn collective ChamberQUEER (CQ) teams up with the Grammy Award-winning Boston institution Handel and Haydn Society for this concert. The event takes place on opening night of CQ's 2025 Pride Festival, Queer Ancestry, and is curated by superstar countertenor Reginald Mobley and CQ co-founders. It asks: whose histories inform the way we play and perceive Baroque music, and what would it mean to center performers' voices and stories? Featuring music by composers ranging from George Frideric Handel and Jean-Baptiste Lully to Julius Eastman and Caroline Shaw, the program celebrates queer perspectives that have shaped the early music revival and influenced generations of boundary-breaking artists.

Play | Shakespeare's Henry V in the Park

Henry V follows the young and newly crowned King Henry V of England as he seeks to prove himself a strong and legitimate ruler. The play begins with Henry’s claim to the French throne, based on ancestral ties, which the French reject. Insulted by the French Dauphin’s mocking gift of tennis balls, Henry launches a military campaign against France. The central action is the Battle of Agincourt, where Henry, despite being outnumbered and exhausted, delivers the famous “St. Crispin’s Day” speech to inspire his troops. The theater supplies 100 chairs nightly for the audience. Those chairs get snatched up fast though, especially at the end of the run or on beautiful summer days, so organizers advise that audience members wanting to use these folding chairs arrive 30 minutes before the start of the performance. You may bring your own chair or something soft to sit on. The theater almost never cancel due to rain, but if necessary, it will post updates on Facebook & Instagram.

Concert | Story & Song Performance with Broadway Alumni

Chris Peters and Madeline Benson each arrived in New York City with a passion for story and song. Benson soon made history as the youngest woman to conduct on Broadway when she served as a conductor for Sara Bareilles' Waitress. Peters quickly became a favorite performer at downtown spots like Rockwood Music Hall and Pete's Candy Store as well as a sideman and producer for a new generation of singer-songwriters. They first collaborated as arrangers, orchestrators, and performers for the late luminary Gavin Creel's Walk On Through. Since then, Benson has been tapped to adapt the upcoming stage version of Disney's Tangled alongside composer Alan Menken. Their performance will feature music from Benson's just-released freshman album, produced by Peters, selections from Peters' and Creel's catalogs, and other favorites from their folk and theater roots. There are two ways to access this event: 1. General Admission, first-come first-served. Just show up! 2. Fast Track, opening the Monday before the event at noon.
