Dance Performance | Ballet set to Clair de Lune by Debussy and more

Pursuant is a piece about the law—about legal and regulatory bodies—about how we impose laws, rules and regulations on our own bodies. The piece explores what happens when one person’s rules are imposed on another, generating a work that is both a compromise and a vacillation between movement qualities. Accession Number: when an object enters a museum's collection, it is assigned an accession number. This piece explores the (im)possibility of preserving dances and dancers as art objects and considers the importance of individual bodies and physical memories as archives of experience. Choreographers: Hannah Rosner (New Haven Ballet, Columbia Ballet Collaborative), Lucia Elledge (Ballet Chicago, Columbia Ballet Collaborative), Katherine Bergstrom (Sydnie L. Mosley Dances) Both pieces will be performed multiple times and visitors are welcome to join the audience at any point.

Film | Inside Charlie Hebdo: Screening and Discussion

A screening of Inside Charlie Hebdo, a documentary based on the February 2006 newsroom discussion at French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo on whether and how to republish the infamous Danish “Mohammed cartoons.” Nine years later Charlie Hebdo staffers were murdered by two terrorists in retaliation for publishing caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed. With remarkable prescience, the filmmakers captured the irreverent French satirists discussing the very issues raised by their own deaths. Véronique Brachet Cabut, widow of Jean Cabut, one of the cartoonists killed in the Charlie Hebdo attack, will speak briefly after the film. She’ll then be joined in discussion by Joel Simon, executive director, the Committee to Protect Journalists; Victor Navasky, author of The Art of Controversy and Suzanne Daley, former Paris bureau chief of the New York Times.

Lecture | Free Speech In an Age of Trumpery: A Lecture by Timothy Garton Ash

Populism in both the United States and Europe relies heavily on establishing a narrative through mass and social media. Often, as in Britain's Brexit debate or the current US presidential election, commentators suggest that we seem to be living in a post-fact society. Drawing on his new book Free Speech: Ten Principles For a Connected World (Yale University Press), Timothy Garton Ash reflects on the new challenges to free speech that have arisen even in countries where people enjoy constitutionally guaranteed freedom of expression. The free speech we need for democracy, he argues, requires more than just the negative liberty of freedom from prior constraint by the state. Reception to follow.

Lecture | No Beliefs About Forms: Doxa in Plato and Aristotle

Both Plato and Aristotle say that doxa—usually translated "belief" or "opinion"—is restricted to a special domain: we have doxa about perceptible things (Plato), or contingent things (Aristotle), but not about necessary, eternal things like Platonic Forms or Aristotelian essences. If doxa is belief in what is now the standard philosophical sense, these restrictions are bizarre: surely one can have beliefs (or opinions) about anything at all. In this talk Moss makes some suggestions about how we should understand doxa in both Plato and Aristotle so as to make sense of their claims. Jessica Moss, Professor of Philosophy at NYU, gives this lecture.

Author Reading | Ruben Gallo discusses his book Proust’s Latin Americans

Part biography, part cultural history, part literary study, Rubén Gallo's book explores the presence of Latin America in Proust's life and work. The novelist lived in an era shaped by French colonial expansion into the Americas: just before his birth, Napoleon III installed Maximilian as emperor of Mexico, and during the 1890s France was shaken by the Panama Affair, a financial scandal linked to the construction of the canal in which thousands of French citizens lost their life savings.

Talk | Angels of Evil: Sympathetic Perpetrators on Small Italian Screens

A lecture by Dana Renga, Ohio State University. Why is it that we forge deep relationships with onscreen characters whom we would regard as undeserving of positive ethical judgment were we to meet them in our day-to-day lives? Why is it that, via the medium of television, we invite them into our homes, even though we would strive to protect ourselves from their nonfictional counterparts? How does narrative transform ‘villains’ into more ethically complex characters while still representing their villainous behavior? To answer these questions, this talk looks at the representation and appeal of criminals when they are the subject of popular fictionalized accounts, focusing on a selection of recent, well-known Italian Sky television series that humanize and create sympathy for perpetrators.

Author Reading | Peter Singer discusses his book Ethics in the Real World

In Ethics in the Real World, Singer applies his controversial ways of thinking to issues like climate change, extreme poverty, animals, abortion, euthanasia, human genetic selection, sports doping, the sale of kidneys, the ethics of high-priced art, and ways of increasing happiness. Singer asks whether chimpanzees are people, smoking should be outlawed, or consensual sex between adult siblings should be decriminalized, and he reiterates his case against the idea that all human life is sacred, applying his arguments to some recent cases in the news. In addition, he explores, in an easily accessible form, some of the deepest philosophical questions, such as whether anything really matters and what is the value of the pale blue dot that is our planet. The collection also includes some more personal reflections, like Singer’s thoughts on one of his favorite activities, surfing, and an unusual suggestion for starting a family conversation over a holiday feast.
