Dance Performance | Ballet set to Clair de Lune by Debussy and more

Pursuant is a piece about the law—about legal and regulatory bodies—about how we impose laws, rules and regulations on our own bodies. The piece explores what happens when one person’s rules are imposed on another, generating a work that is both a compromise and a vacillation between movement qualities. Accession Number: when an object enters a museum's collection, it is assigned an accession number. This piece explores the (im)possibility of preserving dances and dancers as art objects and considers the importance of individual bodies and physical memories as archives of experience. Choreographers: Hannah Rosner (New Haven Ballet, Columbia Ballet Collaborative), Lucia Elledge (Ballet Chicago, Columbia Ballet Collaborative), Katherine Bergstrom (Sydnie L. Mosley Dances) Both pieces will be performed multiple times and visitors are welcome to join the audience at any point.

Lecture | The Challenge to Avert Tragedy: The Winter’s Tale Refigured in Vertigo, Phoenix, and Gone Girl

Who can forget the strange and wondrous end of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale, in which Hermione, the wronged and long-dead queen, is restored to life? Although definitely among the first, the Bard was certainly not the last artist whose imagination was captivated by the notion of the dead woman’s return. Just think of Hitchcock’s Vertigo or Christian Petzold’s Phoenix or David Fincher’s Gone Girl. Join cultural critic Elisabeth Bronfen as she takes us on a journey from Renaissance literature through contemporary cinema to explore the aesthetic and philosophical import of this mysteriously powerful literary trope. Professor Bronfen, of the University of Zurich and New York University, is the author of the groundbreaking Over Her Dead Body: Death, Femininity, and the Aesthetic and, most recently, Mad Men, Death, and the American Dream.

Gallery Talk | Architect Talk: Francis Kéré

Berlin-based architect Francis Kéré discusses past and upcoming projects, illustrating his innovative approach to design and building. Internationally renowned for his utopian "Opera Village", conceived and developed with German visual artist, theater and film director Christoph Schlingensief in rural Burkina Faso, Kéré has shown an unwavering commitment to designing public spaces that promote exchange and collaboration. Invited to take part in this year’s Venice Architecture Biennale, he presented In Pursuit of a new Ouagadougou, an ambitious vision for the reconstruction of Burkina Faso’s Parliament House. Taking cues from the social and spatial dynamics of a typical West African village, Kéré presents a design that aims to shape a new perspective both literally and symbolically on the National Assembly. Following his talk, Kéré will be in conversation with Performa Associate Curator Charles Aubin to examine the role of performance in his projects and reveal how performance can be a radical tool to rethink architecture, its uses and aesthetics.

Lecture | Circles, Lines, and Coils: Picturing Life Stories in Medieval Manuscripts and Rolls

About the speaker: Martha Rust is an associate professor of English at New York University, specializing in late-medieval English literature and manuscript culture. Her first book, Imaginary Worlds in Medieval Books: Exploring the Manuscript Matrix (Palgrave, 2007) envisioned the confines of a medieval manuscript as the potential territory of a virtual world; her current book project, Item: Lists and the Poetics of Reckoning in Late-Medieval England theorizes the list as a device that enables thinking in a variety of modes. She has also written about comics and picture stories in an essay entitled “It’s a Magical World: The Page in Comics and Medieval Manuscripts.”
