Lecture | Facing East From Indian Waters: The Maritime and Global Turn in Native American History

Increasingly, scholars are finding that Native American history does not stop at the water’s edge. New and forthcoming work suggests that our old vision of the Native past as a grounded, territorial story is incorrect: from first contact onwards, indigenous people travelled the world and shaped events far from American shores. Ranging from the Pacific to the Arctic to the Caribbean to the Atlantic, the true history of indigenous mariners, whalers, diplomats, and pirates challenges our understanding of how Native people responded to and participated in European global expansion. Speaker Andrew Lipman is an assistant professor of history and the author of the award-winning book The Saltwater Frontier: Indians and the Contest for the American Coast.

Discussion | Ensuring Urban Resilience, Come Hell or High Water

The capacity of cities to deal with uncertainty paramount demands high-performing urban resilience measures. As such, creating an enduringly resilient city means innovations etched in steel, bricks and mortar as well as through ‘softscape’ innovations now emerging. Urban resilience also means changes in land use along with better and more equitable ways to protect a city'’s people. Realizing these innovations requires that cities give high priority to advancing the emerging capacities to foster new approaches to climate risk management. Speakers: Nancy Anderson, The Sallan Foundation; Hon. Dawn Zimmer, Mayor, Hoboken; Chris Ward, AECOM; former Executive Director, Port Authority of NY and NJ; former Commissioner, NYC DEP; Michael Gerrard, Professor and Director, Sabin Center for Climate Change Law; Joyce Rosenthal, Mailman School of Public Health; Kate Orff, Columbia GSAPP; Nico Kienzl, Atelier Ten; Juan Camilo Osorio, NY Environmental Justice Alliance; Megan Linkin, SwissRe.

Author Reading | Patricia Palermo discusses her book The Message of the City: Dawn Powell’s New York Novels, 1925–1962

Dawn Powell, a Village resident for most of her life, was a gifted satirist who moved in the same circles as Dorothy Parker, Ernest Hemingway, renowned editor Maxwell Perkins, and other midcentury New York luminaries. Her many novels are typically divided into two groups: those dealing with her native Ohio and those set in New York. “From the moment she left behind her harsh upbringing in Mount Gilead, Ohio, and arrived in Manhattan, in 1918, she dove into city life with an outlander’s anthropological zeal,” reads a recent New Yorker piece about Powell, and it is those New York novels that built her reputation for scouring wit and social observation. In this critical biography and study of the New York novels, Patricia Palermo reminds us how Powell earned a place in the national literary establishment and East Coast social scene.

Author Reading | Michael Tackett reads from his book The Baseball Whisperer

Clarinda, Iowa, population 5,000, sits two hours from anything. There, between the corn fields and hog yards, is a ballfield with a bronze bust of a man named Merl Eberly, a baseball whisperer who specialized in second chances and lost causes. The statue was a gift from one of Merl's original long-shot projects, a skinny kid from the ghetto in Los Angeles: Ozzie Smith. The Baseball Whisperer traces the remarkable story of Merl Eberly and his Clarinda A's baseball team, which he tended over the course of five decades, transforming it from a town team to a collegiate summer league powerhouse. Along with Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith, future manager Bud Black, and star player Von Hayes, Eberly developed scores of major leaguers -- six of which are currently playing.
