Author Reading | Giorgia Lupi and Stefanie Posavec discuss their book Dear Data: A Friendship in 52 Weeks of Postcards

The event will feature a conversation between the authors and Maria Popova (Brain Pickings). After only meeting twice, designers Giorgia Lupi (an Italian living in New York) and Stefanie Posavec (an American living in London) decided to embark on a year long project in an effort to get to know one another better. The result is 'Dear Data.' The book reproduces their transatlantic exchange through their weekly postcards. A combination of mail art and data visualization, through their weekly correspondence the two women shared various facets of lives from how many times they complained to how many times they laughed a week. Taking an analog approach to communication in a digital world, 'Dear Data' asks readers to take a look at even the most mundane moments of their everyday life because data, as the duo states, "is the beginning of a story, not the end, and should be seen as the starting point for questioning and understanding the world around us instead of seeing it as the definitive answer to all of our questions."

Workshop | Intro Class: Medical Qigong

With: William J. Kaplanidis. The Ba Duan Jin (“Eight pieces of brocade”) is a Taoist medical qigong set of eight therapeutic practices that dates back over 1,000 years. Over the centuries, many have experienced its numerous health benefits, and it is one of the most famous of all qigong forms. There are several variations of each exercise that combine gentle movements with breath coordination, and they can be easily modified for people of varying fitness levels. In addition to increasing strength and flexibility and improving posture, this set can provide benefits to the respiratory, circulatory, nervous, digestive and lymphatic systems. The practices are relatively simple to learn, and one begins to feel their subtle, yet profound benefits after only a few weeks of practice.

Opening Reception | Jonathan Gardner: New Paintings

The first New York solo exhibition by artist Jonathan Gardner. With a natural proclivity for figurative, still life, and landscape painting, the artist honed his idiosyncratic style at the Art Institute of Chicago, where he studied under Chicago-based artist Jim Nutt. Not unlike Nutt and the Chicago-Imagists of the late-1960s, who cultivated a distinctively surreal tone and took inspiration from all walks of life, Gardner’s compositions are guided by an internal meandering.

An exhibition of new works by sculptor Joel Perlman. Well known for monumental sculptures that juxtapose flat geometries of welded steel in three-dimensional space, the artist’s latest work continues his exploration of curvilinear form. Two large-scale steel sculptures and four smaller works in bronze present a careful study of scale and form. The varied surfaces of each work highlight the artists sensitivity to the inherent qualities of the metal.

Opening Reception | Paintings: Alex Couwenberg's Left at 69's

A native of Southern California, painter Alex Couwenberg creates images that are inspired by the elements of his surroundings. Couwenberg's work references his Los Angeles roots and suggests the aesthetic associated with car culture, surfboards, skateboards, and modernist design. Historically, his work pays a visual homage to the art making styles connected with Los Angeles and Southern California dating back to the 1950's and nods towards the Hard-Edge and Geometric Abstractionists, the Finish Fetish, and the Light and Space artists who created the aesthetic of LA's art making community.

Opening Reception | Paintings: Dan Schein's Where Do We Dump The Bodies?

For his first major solo show in New York, the thirty-year-old artist has created a series of darkly humorous paintings in a somber palette and with robust, fervid brushstrokes, as well as drawings scribbled in graphite. Influenced as much by boyish fables, graphic novels, and time spent in densely-wooded areas of Wisconsin, as by the paintings of Pieter Brueghel the Elder and Hieronymus Bosch, Schein's compositions are intimate at the same time that they are vast. The subject matter is redolent - sometimes vaguely medieval, other times faintly biblical - and because of this, we find ourselves searching from painting to painting for a narrative that may never cohere.

Author Reading | Kyle Arnold discusses his book The Divine Madness of Philip K. Dick

In February of 1974, the cult science fiction writer Philip K. Dick had a series of visions. First, there was a mysterious flash of pink light that Dick believed awakened his mind. Then there were images of bizarre engineering blueprints, and streams of "liquid fire" that seemed to move through his environment and enter his body. Dick saw scenes from ancient Rome superimposed over his environment. He theorized that time had stopped in the year 50 A.D. and that he was a Christian revolutionary destined to overthrow the Roman Empire. For the rest of his life, Dick wondered whether his visions were genuine spiritual experiences or symptoms of mental illness.

Concert | Lots of Guitars: An Open-Air Concert

An open-air concert in a courtyard to celebrate the 39th HAUS-FEST with Lots of Guitars, an ongoing collaborative project involving saxophonist Timo Vollbrecht and guitarist Kenji Herbert. The Lots of Guitars ensemble, which is usually augmented with an additional guitar and piano, will be paired down to a duo for a special, intimate presentation. Drawing from a broad stylistic palette, their music examines the rich sonic possibilities afforded by the two instruments, from dense, orchestral textures to a refined interplay between the two voices. Guitarist Kenji Herbert, born to an Austrian father and Japanese mother, has distilled his unique background and diverse influences into a guitar sound characteristically his own. An alumnus of Berklee College of Music (summa cum laude, 2011), he was an inaugural member of its honor program, Berklee Global Jazz Institute, under the artistic direction of Danilo Perez. Timo Vollbrecht is a German saxophonist, currently based in NYC. As a Fulbright scholar, he holds a master's degree in jazz saxophone from New York University, where he studied with Mark Turner, Stefon Harris, and Joe Lovano. Currently, he is working on his PhD in jazz performance and composition.
