Discussion | Dadaglobe Reconstructed: A Discussion of the Artworks and Texts

In 1920 and 1921, Tristan Tzara, co-founder of the Dada movement, planned an ambitious anthology: Dadaglobe. This volume was to have been 160 to 300 pages long and printed in an edition of 10,000 copies. The project ran into budgetary and interpersonal problems and was never published. What remained after its demise were over 100 artworks and 100 texts that had been sent to Tzara for its pages, many of which were specifically created for it. Adrian Sudhalter has spent the last six years identifying and locating the intended contributions to Dadaglobe and reconstructing this book based on indications Tzara left behind in his archive. Many of the artworks intended for Dadaglobe are considered icons of 20th century art, but their origin in this volume have long been forgotten. This conversation between Sudhalter, an art historian and resident of the New York Public Library's Frederick Lewis Allen Memorial Room, and Mary Ann Caws, a world-renowned scholar and translator of Dada and Surrealist texts, moderated by MoMA Assistant Curator Samantha Friedman, considers the ways in which artworks and texts are transformed, translated, and transmuted on the printed page.

Discussion | Ending Domination: The Personal Is Political

Join bell hooks and Jill Soloway for this conversation. In both of their careers, bell hooks and Jill Soloway have been deeply committed to using the autobiographical to create greater awareness of injustice and generate critical discourse. The early feminist movement was dedicated to the proposition that the personal is political. This insight has come to be increasingly mocked and ridiculed. But hooks and Soloway believe that by excavating the personal and its politics, we find we are both stronger in our efforts to liberate ourselves in the world. We become more capable of becoming true peacemakers. We are more able to love justice.

Talk | Pushing the Boundary of Manga: Gekiga and Japanese Counterculture

In present Japan, gekiga loosely refers to a body of Japanese comics (manga) with a long narrative (story manga) that is oriented toward teen and older male readers, typically with little or no humor. In manga criticism, gekigahas been defined in contrast to mainstream manga in terms of visual style and content. This talk explores the socio-historical and cultural context of the development of gekiga by examining the shifting media ecology of Japanese comics industry, important comics artists and their works, and the impact of gekiga on other artistic and cultural practices. The focus will be on two major “alternative” magazines: Garo (1964 – 2002) and COM (1967-1972), both of which offered an outlet for innovative, unorthodox, and transgressive artists. Speaker Shige (CJ) Suzuki is Assistant Professor of Modern Languages and Comparative Literature at Baruch College, where he teaches courses in Japan Studies such as Japanese literature, film, and popular culture.
