Discussion | Bringing It All Home: Problems and Possibilities Facing NYC's Family Child Care

Child care provided in a private home is the most common child care arrangement for children from low-income families and for babies and toddlers. Yet these programs have historically received little oversight and their quality, on average, has been found wanting. In 2012, with the advent of EarlyLearn, New York City imposed new quality standards on its licensed, subsidized family child care programs. Over three years in, how has this reform played out? What has it taught us about the challenges facing the City's family child care providers? What works to improve family child care and where should the City go from here?

Design has established itself as a powerful change agent and the guiding principle of design is to better the world around us. The driving force behind design is the practice of business for profit. Increasingly, both practicing designers and students are seeking opportunities in this field. Panelists: _ Karen J. Stone, Director of Design, Knoll, Inc. _ Lisa Tziona Switkin, Principal, James Corner Field Operations _ Rob Van Varick, Principal - Insights and Strategy _ Michael Graves, Architecture and Design _ Deborah Alden, Managing Director, Brooklyn Fashion and Design Accelerator _ Mark Randall, Principal, Worldstudio Moderator: Vijay Chakravarthy, Chapter Chair, Industrial Designers Society of America, NYC chapter

Author Reading | Franklin Vagnone and Deborah Ryan discuss their book Anarchist's Guide to Historic House Museums

Join Franklin Vagnone, Principal of Twisted Preservation: Cultural Consulting and co-author with University of North Carolina Architecture and Urban Design professor Deborah Ryan as they discuss their renegade tactics that have yielded a sold-out book (in its third printing, and chosen as the #1 museum-education related book in 2015 by the Museum Educator Monitor!) and become a manifesto for touring aficionados. A seminal text on historic house museums, Anarchist’s Guide incites museum professionals to break the rules in order to stem eroding visitorship, engage adjacent communities, and enlist these properties as protagonists for social programs. Their unorthodox methods aim to introduce preservation to new audiences, and save historic houses in the process.
