Play | Hudson Warehouse presents Shakespeare's Othello

Shakespeare's tragedy, believed to have been written in 1603. It is based on the story "A Moorish Captain" by Cinthio, first published in 1565. This tightly constructed work revolves around four central characters: Othello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army; his beloved wife, Desdemona; his loyal lieutenant, Cassio; and his trusted but ultimately unfaithful ensign, Iago. Given its varied and enduring themes of racism, love, jealousy, betrayal, revenge and repentance, Othello is still often performed in professional and community theatre alike, and has been the source for numerous operatic, film, and literary adaptations. Takes place Thursdays thru Sundays, July 28-August 21.

Concert | Dwight Yoakam, Country and Americana Star

An iconic torchbearer of the plainspoken Bakersfield sound made famous by Buck Owens and Merle Haggard, Dwight Yoakam’s pioneering songs evoke the dusty backroad, barroom feel of the American west. On his latest album, Second Hand Heart, the country superstar has produced “some of the best music of his life” (Spin). Filled with the “hillbilly” spirit of early hits like “Guitars, Cadillacs,” “Honky Tonk Man,” and “Streets of Bakersfield,” this newest collection of songs ranges from stompers to ballads, best performed live with Yoakam’s golden voice, six-string guitar, and kickin’ band. To get things started, the charismatic Minneapolis-born brothers behind The Cactus Blossoms— Jack Torrey and Page Burkum—give voice to lilting harmonies that recall the glory days of the Everly and Louvin Brothers. Inspired by early country-and-western acts, they have penned a charming catalogue of original songs that makes a simpler, more wholesome life seem well within reach.

Tony-winning director Daniel Sullivan returns with one of the Bard’s most rarely produced plays, Troilus and Cressida. Both warriors and lovers play hard to get in this surprisingly modern epic about the hot blood, hot thoughts and hot deeds of the ancient Greeks. In the 7th year of the Trojan War, Troilus, a young prince, pines for the affections of Cressida, a bright young woman who knows how to play it cool. Meanwhile, the heroes of the Iliad – Ajax, Ulysses, Achilles and the kings they serve - debate whether to return the dangerously beautiful captive Helen or continue to fight without end. Nations and lovers alike do battle in this funny, piercing drama about romance and revenge in a world at war.
