Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Tours are Mondays and Fridays at 2pm, and Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am.

Rockefeller Jr. with his own money, he instructed his team of designers and architects to build the most beautiful commercial complex of it’s kind in the world. Play | Hudson Warehouse presents Shakespeare's Othello

Shakespeare's tragedy, believed to have been written in 1603. It is based on the story "A Moorish Captain" by Cinthio, first published in 1565. This tightly constructed work revolves around four central characters: Othello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army; his beloved wife, Desdemona; his loyal lieutenant, Cassio; and his trusted but ultimately unfaithful ensign, Iago. Given its varied and enduring themes of racism, love, jealousy, betrayal, revenge and repentance, Othello is still often performed in professional and community theatre alike, and has been the source for numerous operatic, film, and literary adaptations. Concert | Reggae Music: Morgan Heritage / British Dependency

Originally formed in Brooklyn by the children of reggae legend Denroy Morgan, Morgan Heritage “has inherited the legacy of his influential music.” (Billboard) The band has been going strong since coming together for its first performance at the 1994 Reggae Sunsplash, quickly being dubbed The Royal Family of Reggae and getting signed immediately to MCA. A trio from Anguilla with global ambitions, British Dependency’s “approachable blend of reggae, funk, and pop still has a little edge—much like their satirical moniker. For a three-piece group, they’ve got a big sound.” (LargeUp.com) Their most recent record, Finding Wisdom, was recorded at Tuff Gong in Kingston; it earned them a spot touring with The Wailers last year.

Concert | Singer-Songwriters: M. Ward / Margaret Glaspy

Get ready for guitar exclamations both punchy and profound in this double bill featuring veteran Portland-based singer-songwriter M. Ward and the up-and-coming power pop talent of Margaret Glaspy, whose debut album Emotions and Math was released by ATO Records this summer. Fueled by “a conviction that simple songs can transcend time” (Pitchfork), M. Ward has been a galvanizing force in folk-accented indie songwriting since the early 2000s. Ward and Glaspy’s songs share invigorated traditional structures and potent vocals, but where his songs possess a certain moodiness, she tends to charge her lyrics with defiant sunniness.

Play | The Iron Heel: adaptation of Jack London's novel

The play is frameworked as a 27th Century Historical Reenactment Drama, presented in the socialist utopia London predicted in his prologue and footnotes. As onstage "historian," Antonia Meredith, welcomes the audience in with food, drink, and participatory music (folk songs from the early 20th Century, some with altered lyrics to reflect the action of the play). Written as socialist propaganda, the Iron Heel is the story of an election between a socialist revolutionary and an entrenched oligarch. The oligarch prevails, turning America fascist, and inspiring the Marxist revolution. Set in Jack London's future, 1912 - 1934, its themes nonetheless have obvious relevance during this election season, a century later.

Theater | Shakespeare in the Park: Troilus and Cressida

Tony-winning director Daniel Sullivan returns with one of the Bard’s most rarely produced plays, Troilus and Cressida. Both warriors and lovers play hard to get in this surprisingly modern epic about the hot blood, hot thoughts and hot deeds of the ancient Greeks. In the 7th year of the Trojan War, Troilus, a young prince, pines for the affections of Cressida, a bright young woman who knows how to play it cool. Meanwhile, the heroes of the Iliad – Ajax, Ulysses, Achilles and the kings they serve - debate whether to return the dangerously beautiful captive Helen or continue to fight without end. Nations and lovers alike do battle in this funny, piercing drama about romance and revenge in a world at war.
