Screening | Black Box Diaries (2024): Japanese Documentary with Filmmaker Discussion

In 2017, Japanese journalist Shiori Itō publicly accused a prominent media executive (and associate of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe) of rape, and published a bestselling memoir detailing her case — Black Box, a book credited with sparking the #MeToo movement in Japan. Black Box Diaries is a survivor’s real-time investigation of her own sexual assault — and includes raw video diaries (shot on Itō’s iPhone), surreptitious audio recordings of police negligence, and vérité courtroom footage. Itō documents her courageous struggle to navigate Japan’s patriarchal judiciary and antiquated sex crimes laws (proven lack of consent was insufficient) and quest for justice. Director: Shiori Ito

Play | Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream: Classic Comedy Fantasy

Step into the midnight woods where love gets messy, the moon hangs low, and nothing’s quite what it seems. Hermia and Lysander run for their lives, chased by Demetrius—who’s chased by Helena, who’d give anything for his crooked heart. Deep in the same shadows, fairy royalty Oberon and Titania are tearing each other apart. Enter Puck, trickster, hustler, mischief-maker, shaking the dice cup of magic and letting it spill across the forest floor. Suddenly, lovers swap affections, dreams turn sideways, and a ragtag crew of “rude mechanicals” led by the hapless Nick Bottom stumble into the spotlight. It’s a carnival of chaos, a moon-drenched fever dream where love is complicated, laughter is deep, and the night itself is drunk on magic. Written by William Shakespeare. Adapted and directed by Michael F. Toomey. Cast: Niarra Bell, Zeynep Kaptan, Theo Kleiman, Lex Leone, Tom Marshall, Nate Metcalf, Auryn Rothwell, Johnny Yan, Guy Zahut.
