Author Reading | Launch of Nonfiction Book about Chilean Cinema

This event celebrates the launch of Transnational Cinema Solidarity: Chilean Exile Film and Video after 1973. After the 1973 military coup that put an end to the socialist government of Salvador Allende, most Chilean filmmakers went into exile, where they made more than two hundred films dispersed all over the world. Building upon extensive archival research, José Miguel Palacios tells the story of this radical cinema and argues for an understanding of transnational cinema solidarity as a widespread geography of political and artistic friendships that shape film production and circulation.

Other | The American West and the Aftermath of the Dust Bowl: Cycles of Resource Extraction and Enviornmental Degradation

Stuart Chase's book "Rich Land, Poor Land" examines the cycle of resource extraction and environmental degradation -- arguing for respect for natural resources and processes in the context of the devastation of the American Dust Bowl. This Exhibition explores the connection between brutality within the expropriation of resources and occupants and the symbolism of landscape and its bounty. Expect a film screening, a visual collection, and a reading by Michael Ashkin in this exhibition to bring these concepts to life.

Opening Reception | Understanding in Constant Flux: Smears and Scrapes in Painting

American painter Jeanette Mundt draws inspiration from a range of sources, whether personal photographs, popular culture, film or the art historical canon. Mundt's view is that our understanding is in constant flux, and that we therefore can't by any means be consistent in psychic space or in our seeing. Materiality and surface are central to the production of Mundt's pieces. She layers thick hues of pigments on one another, then smears, scrapes, or pulls them apart. She is best known for her works in the 2019 Whitney Biennial.
