Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would serve as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 11 mayors, beginning with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Each tour is one hour, followed by a 15-minute Q&A session with an assigned docent.

Talk | Expert Discusses Interconnected History of Italy & Brazil

Author Giulia Ricco speaks about her book and the history of Italians in Brazil in conversation withFrancesca Parmeggiani (Fordham University) and Zita Nunes (University of Pennsylvania). The Italian Colony of Sao Paulo: Race, Class, and Cultural Capital in Brazil argues that, contrary to what one might expect, Italians first became racialized as white in Sao Paulo, Brazil at the turn of the twentieth century. This book brings to light how the overlooked experiences of Italians in Brazil complicate conventional narratives about the racial ambiguity and oppression of Italians in the Americas, on the one hand, and the conflation of Italians with cultural and economic backwardness in Europe, on the other. About the Author: Giulia Ricco is an Assistant Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Her research and teaching focus on modern Italian and Brazilian literature and culture, with particular attention to nationalism and migration.

Author Reading | Hear from Legendary Actor Leonard Nimoy's Son about His Father

Discover how the son of Spock learned to navigate this tumultuous relationship, and how he was finally able to reconcile with his father, and with himself. While the tabloids and fan publications portrayed the Nimoys as a “close family,” to his son Adam, Leonard Nimoy was a total stranger. The actor was as inscrutable as the iconic half-Vulcan science officer he portrayed on Star Trek, even to those close to him. Now, Adam Nimoy’s poignant memoir explores their complicated relationship and how it informed his views on marriage, parenting, and later, sobriety. Despite their differences, both men ventured down parallel paths: marriages leading to divorce, battling addiction, and finding recovery. Most notably, both men struggled to take the ninth step in their AA journey: to make amends with each other.  RSVP does not guarantee entry. Coat check is limited. Please do not bring any large bags or backpacks.

Discussion | Three Experts Exchange Opinions on the Legacy of French Enlightenment

Enlightenment professor Antoine Lilti, in conversation with history professor Carl Wennerlind and French professor Joanna Stalnaker. The Enlightenment has come under substantial attack over the past several years, with some going so far as to recommend leaving its thinkers--and their Eurocentric prejudices--behind. On the other hand, the most orthodox defenders of the Enlightenment insist that its values are not just foundational but indispensable and that leaving them behind means opening the door to nihilism and relativism. For Antoine Lilti, one of the leading scholars of the French Enlightenment, both sides are wrong.
