Lecture | Learn about the Influence of Artist Papa Cezanne

Guests will look at Papa Cezanne's works, then briefly those of Matisse, Picasso, Mondrian, Braque, Hartley, and Beckmann. Cezanne was called the father of us all by both Matisse and Picasso. Why? He pulled away from the classic painting style of realism, 3- point perspective and narrative based on themes of myth and history. His work is rather flat and architectural, using the three forms which he said exist prominently in nature: cone, cylinder and sphere. This style of his gives way to the modernist painters of abstraction and cubism.  Speaker Eleanor K. Sypher has volunteered her extensive skills in a series of talks on art history, first enjoyed at Arizona State University and a local art center for the past six years. Eleanor is well-acquainted with ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, Byzantium, The Italian Renaissance, The Baroque in Italy and Holland, Rococo in France, the Impressionists, and European and American artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Screening | The Raven (Le Corbeau): Historic, Controversial French Horror Film

A wave of anonymous poison-pen letters signed “Le Corbeau” (“The Raven”) unsettles a quiet provincial town, gradually revealing the paranoia, resentment, and moral decay lurking beneath its tranquil façade. This film is a chilling psychological thriller and a razor-sharp allegory of authoritarianism, suspicion, and collective guilt. Produced during the Nazi occupation of France, the film sparked outrage across the political spectrum. The Vichy regime condemned it as subversive; the Resistance press denounced its collaborationist undertones; and the Catholic Church decried its cynical view of human nature. After the Liberation, Le Corbeau was banned and the director was temporarily barred from filmmaking. Director: Henri-Georges Clouzot Cast: Pierre Fresnay, Ginette Leclerc, Pierre Larquey, Micheline Francey In French with English subtitles.
