There will ... more >> be lots of guidance and each segment of the day will be short enough so that beginners can feel comfortable, and long enough for experienced meditators to enjoy it. The program includes sitting and walking meditation, meditation on the breath, the body, thoughts and feelings, some poetry for inspiration, loving-kindness meditation, and some gentle stretching. There will be an overall practice of learning to stay with our experience, joyfully. Lunch break at 12:15 PM. No need for special clothing. Chair provided.

But beyond the new, are institutions that have excelled here for years: from the Irondale Ensemble, to MoCADA (Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts); from BAM Harvey to Greenlight Bookstore to Spike Lee's 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks. This two-hour guided walking tour allows you to experience the old, the new, and what's to come! Learn how this concentration of venues and people is shifting the cultural landscape of the borough and the city, while you discover the surprising historical core: a flourishing Fulton Street arts center, of more than a century ago. Over the 120 minutes, you will stroll through the gorgeous brownstone-dotted streets of Fort Greene, past both spontaneous and commissioned street art, to see where more than a dozen spaces and locations have already made the Brooklyn Cultural District a major arts destination for performances of every type, large and small. Adding to the Brooklyn cultural experience, "pop-up" performances by Fort Greene's American Opera Projects, accompany the tour. Tour Leader Dr. Ron Janoff is a licensed tour guide, a professor of Classics, Coordinator of the Rockwell Place Community Garden in the heart of the Brooklyn Cultural District, and a long-time Fort Greene resident. He has led walking tours of Brooklyn and Manhattan for more than 25 years.

Lesson | Democracy and Voting Rights in the United States: A Contested History
This course will interrogate the history of democratic participation in the United States, with an emphasis ... more >> on disparities in access to the ballot, racial discrimination, and violence, which continue to exclude voters from the franchise. We will start with an overview of the historical development of democratic inclusion, exclusion, and participation in the United States, and then focus on how social, political and economic institutions intersect with and inform this development. The second half of the course will focus on the ways that democratic participation in the United States is mediated and informed by the carceral state, the regulation of citizenship, political power, wealth, redistricting, and contemporary voter suppression efforts. The class will conclude with a discussion of current efforts to secure and expand voting rights in the United States, focusing on a selection of promising innovations, reforms, and movement building projects. Saturdays, October 6, 20, 27, November 3, and 10 from 3:00 - 4:30pm.

German interpreter Gesine Cresspahl, who was born in a small village ... more >> in the German province of Mecklenburg, feels out of place in her adopted country. She has never gotten over the death of Jakob, her true love. The father of her now eleven-year-old daughter was run over by a train and killed. At Marie’s insistence Gesine begins to tell the story of her family, which in turn is a story of what happened in Germany. The memories stretch from Hitler’s rise to power and World War II, to the post-war period and the establishment of East Germany, and finally to the suppression of the Prague Spring in the summer of 1968. For a long time Uwe Johnson’s complex masterwork Anniversaries was believed to be unfilmable. Director Margarethe von Trotta filmed it anyway. The result is a four-part miniseries, in which von Trotta succeeds in translating the complexity and intricacy of the novel into cinematic language. 270 min. In German with English subtitles.
