For a few short days every spring, New Yorkers are invited to enter the fascinating world of some of Manhattan’s finest artists. Now in its 15th year, The TriBeCa Open Artist Studio Tour (TOAST) is an open invitation to the public to take a free, self-guided tour through artists’ studios in TriBeCa. TOAST attendees are able to visit the artists’ studios, view their work and talk to the artists themselves. Those who take the tour will also have the chance to purchase work directly from the artists, helping to support them in the pursuit of their craft. This year, the 15th Annual TriBeCa Open Artist Studio Tour features approximately a 100 artists of varying genres and will be held in 36 different buildings in TriBeCa. The tour will also take participants through TriBeCa art galleries and exhibits, including those at the New York Academy of Art.

Since the emergence of cinema in the late-19th century, the role of costume, fabrics, and fashion has been crucial in conveying an aesthetic dimension and establishing a new sensorial and emotional relationship with viewers. Through the interaction of fashion, costume, and film it is possible to gauge a deeper understanding of the cinematic, its complex history, and the mechanisms underlying modernity, the construction of gender, urban transformations, consumption, technological and aesthetic experimentation. Lecture | Responding to HIV and AIDS in Brazil: Structural Violence, Social Movements, and the Local Politics of Global Health

Based on an extended ethnographic case study (carried out on an on-going basis over nearly 30 years), this paper analyzes the social and political dimensions to HIV and AIDS in Brazil. It focuses on the structural factors and social inequalities that have shaped the Brazilian epidemic over time. It then traces the historical development of grassroots mobilization in response to the epidemic, and the role of a number of key social movements in shaping both policy and practice in response to HIV and AIDS in Brazil. It examines the ways in which these developments took shape within a context of an opening in civil society and redemocratization after two decades of military dictatorship, and the ways they have evolved in relation to the changing context of Brazilian social and political history over the course of the past three decades. While the extended case study is primarily focused on local and national Brazilian experience, it also explores the ways in which these developments have influenced changing approaches on the global level – examining the ethical and political principles that Brazilian actors have increasingly articulated in intergovernmental and transnational political arenas. Was it nine years of uninterrupted prosperity and economic growth? Or, was it the eruption of riots in all of our major cities? Was it a divisive war that led to terrible domestic disunion? Was it the decade of horrifying political assassinations? Was it sex, drugs and rock "n" roll? This series of lectures will confront these issues head on. We will feature individuals of great artistic and scholarly achievement. Many were also active participants in one or more of the struggles that occurred in that decade.
