City Walk | Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn Heights and Dumbo Tour


This is a 3-hour tour that begins with a walk over the Brooklyn Bridge, an icon of New York City for over 125 years, with spectacular views of Manhattan and Brooklyn. The tour then moves on to a stroll of Brooklyn Heights, America’s and New York City’s first suburb. The tour then explores the neighborhood DUMBO before ending at the Fulton Ferry landing. This tour takes place every day at 10am.

Master Class | Cellist Qiang Tu: Master Class


Since arriving in the United States in 1987, Chinese-born Qiang Tu has established himself as a multifaceted artist much in demand. He won the San Angelo, Texas, Symphony Young Artist Competition in 1987, and the Grand Prize in the Downey Symphony Young Artist Competition of Los Angeles the following year. In 1994, he served as Principal Cellist of the Princeton Chamber Symphony.

Concert | ARTEK performs Haydn’s Seven Last Words


Franz Joseph Haydn's Seven Last Words was originally written for orchestra. Later, Haydn arranged the work for string quartet, and later oversaw an edition for chorus. In 1801, his publisher Artaria brought out an arrangement for solo fortepiano, and Haydn also gave his approval for this version. ARTEK Director Gwendolyn Toth will perform the fortepiano version for this concert.

Master Class | Oscar Ghiglia: Guitar Master Class


The Italian guitarist, Oscar Ghiglia was born of an artistic family - his father and grandfather were both famed painters and his mother an accomplished pianist. Oscar Ghiglia had to choose between a path strewn with brushes and colours and a world cut into harmony and melody. Though his early choice produced a few hundred water colours and a number of oil paintings, he soon realised music was his way. For this decision he thanks his father, who one day made him pose for a painting showing a guitarist. For this he had to hold his father’s guitar, a companion to his artistic musings in front of his forming works. This painting was the start to a lifetime of disciplined dedication to music.

Screening | Dance on Film: Balanchine’s Serenade


In 1934, George Balanchine completed his first original ballet in America, Serenade. Today, it continues to be a beloved signature work in New York City Ballet’s repertory, and is danced by companies across this and many other nations. In August, Alastair Macaulay, chief dance critic of the "New York Times,” and Robert Greskovic, who writes about dance for the “Wall Street Journal,” chaired a seminar with Balanchine dancers and scholars. Join them now for an evening of rarely seen historic and noteworthy films, photographs, and expert commentary in which they share their findings.

Workshop | Design Workshop: Exploring Mosaics


Join an evening of hands-on design with acclaimed Mexican designer, Emiliano Godoy, whose products are on view in Beauty—Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial. With a commitment to a socially and environmentally responsible practice, Godoy develops processes that rely on skilled labor and utilize local materials. During the workshop participants will learn about the history of marquetry and Godoy’s contemporary approach to this traditional craft and furniture-making technique. Each participant will create their own unique contemporary mosaic design, using small colored tangram tiles of wood. For ages 18 and up. Workshop materials will be provided.

Choreographer and performer Adham Hafez, Artistic Director of Cairo’s HaRaKa, presents his work on the Arabic-speaking region and Europe, including his latest production 2065 BC—a displaced and revisited re-enactment of the infamous Berlin Conference of 1884, which formalized the Scramble for Africa. 2065 BC developed from an ongoing examination of politics and aesthetics in Cairo, Berlin, and New York, centering on the ethics of occupation, cultural hegemony, and aesthetic violence.
