Tour | U.S. Custom House Tour


Join a Museum Ambassador for an in-depth look at the unique architecture and exquisite beauty of the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House, home of the museum. Designed by famed architect Cass Gilbert and completed in 1907, the Custom House is a National Historic Landmark. The building’s interior splendor includes an elliptical rotunda with a 140-ton dome skylight designed by Valencia-born engineer Raphael Gustavino and murals by New York painter Reginald Marsh, as well as monumental marble arches and columns. Tours include a visit to the Collectors Office, not normally accessible to the public. The Collectors Office features woodwork by Tiffany Studios and can be seen on Boardwalk Empire and in films like Spike Lee’s Inside Man.

While researching the histories of love and sexuality for his novel La Gula del Picaflor (The Gluttony of the Hummingbird, 2003), Juan Lechin found interesting clues of what appears to be the existence of lengthy cycles in history which go from female civilization to male, and, currently, heading back to a female era. The female societies of common property have been permanently overlooked, even though the very long processes of agriculture and animal domestication were some of their exceptional achievements.

Andy Akiho was born in 1979 in Columbia, South Carolina and now resides in New York City. His musical interests run from steel pan to traditional classical music. Akiho's debut CD No One To Know One, on innova Recordings, features brilliantly crafted compositions that pose intricate rhythms and exotic timbres around his primary instrument, the steel pan.

Performance | Jessica Segall's 1/2 a cord: An Installation 'Campout'


Jessica Segall’s installation involves a very simple task rendered complicated in New York City. During the installation, Segall will be tending to a small fire in the center of the gallery. Visitors are welcome to stay, warm up and engage in conversation for any period of time. There is no formal behavior aside from general campsite rules. The campout begins at 6pm and lasts until the next morning at 10am. Jessica Segall is a multidisciplinary artist living in New York City. With a mix of humor and elbow grease, her work investigates the link between creativity and survival; engaging current cultural attitudes towards adaptation. Segall’s work has been exhibited at the 10th Havana Bienal, The National Gallery of Indonesia, The Queens Museum of Art, the Aldrich Museum, The Inside Out Museum in Beijing and The National Modern Art Gallery of Mongolia.

Once stalwarts of the radio, whose voices brought major sporting events into the nation's living rooms, The Commentators have fallen on hard times. Now commentating on anything and everything, they say it as they see it – all the world as sport. They now bring their very special skills to the lobby of the theater, where they will carefully relay all the evening’s events to live and online audiences around the world. The Commentators have brought their undying passion for words and life to a range of events now including a gallery opening, the World Gurning Championship, 12 hours in the life of Broad Street, a primary school sports day, and the opening days of the new Library of Birmingham. Opening Reception | Photography: Florian Reischauer's Grüss Gott - A Fairy Tale


Florian Reischauer's solo show is a narration based on childhood memories which takes place in a little village in the countryside. It deals with traditions, recurring seasons, the feeling of being protected by a familiar constant and a certain consciousness of being stuck in time. It's a never-ending story with an unwritten plot, which is nevertheless created by its protagonists. Florian Reischauer (b. 1985) is an Austrian photographer and blogger based in Berlin. In 2013, a solo exhibition of the project was shown at the Austrian Cultural Forum in Berlin, and a book of the same name has just been published.

Concert | Percussion: Wet Ink Ensemble / Deborah Lohse and the Shakedown Dance Collective


For more than a decade, the New York-based Wet Ink Ensemble has commissioned, premiered and recorded works by many of today’s most promising emerging composers, while also continually collaborating with a broad international range of highly-renowned artists. For this performance, Mantra Percussion performs three new works written by the founding composers of Wet Ink – Sam Pluta, Alex Mincek and Eric Wubbels – to be accompanied by a new film, as well as the choreography of Deborah Lohse performed by the Shakedown Dance Collective. Contemporary classical music and the art of percussion will be reinvented and paired with dance to create a unique experience.

Concert | Wicked Women: Music of Handel, Lully, Balliett


Presented by SacroProfano: Laura Bohn, Soprano; Kristin Olson and Priscilla Herreid, oboe; Nate Helgeson, bassoon; Sarah Stone, cello; John Lenti, theorbo; Doug Balliett, narration. Some of the most fabled and powerful women of mythological history come to life in a program of new and old music, performed by the baroque chamber ensemble SacroProfano in their east coast debut. Acclaimed storyteller and composer Doug Balliet’s song cycle Wicked Women is the centerpiece of this 1-hour seamless musical production. Arias and incidental music by Handel and Lully round out the program.
