Free Events, Free Things to Do in New York City!  Read More
New York gives you numerous choices when you are in a mood to attend an art gallery exhibition or be a part of an exhibition opening. Some sources say that there are more than a thousand of art galleries in NYC and, of  course, you do not have time to attend them all. But the good thing is that art galleries are usually located in clusters and so if you go to one of them, there is, basically, a 100% chance that you will be able to see art works, be that paintings or photos or scupltures, in many other art galleries located just nearby, whatever neightborhood you happen to be in.

The very first neighborhood where artist lived and art galleries thrived in New York City was Grenwich Village, which boated active art scene as far back as 1850. That active art scene did last: Greenwich Village was the place where Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney opened her Whitney Studio Club Gallery in 1914, which would become the Whitney Museum for American Art (now located in Chelsea).

With immigrants pouring into the city in larger numbers than ever before at the turn of the century, the wealthy families tried to outrun their spread uptown by moving to the Upper East Side. The art galleries followed the buyers and established themselves in the neighboorhood as well.

Midtown, Grenwich Village and the Upper East Side housed most of the New York art galleries for over 100 years. Those three neighborhoods continue to house many of Manhattan art galleries. Upper East Side art galleries are located mostly in the area between Park and Fifth Aves in the mid-70s. Midtown art galleries are clustered near Fifth Avenue. Many of them are on the 57th St. They usually represent big name artists.

Early in the 1960s artists started moving into the neglected commercial lofts of the cast-iron district south of Houston Street, known as SoHo. In the 1970s and ’80s SoHo was the City’s best-known art distric. But SoHo art galleries became the victims of the neighborhood's success which they themselves have created. Before the artists moved into SoHo, the neightborhood was an array of empty factories buildings and abandoned warehouses. Artists moved in as the premises had lots of light and space, and were dirt cheap. As the artists were right there, the art galleries sprang up. The neighboorhood attarcted crowds and so retailers decided to capitalize on the cool images that SoHo have attained. They flooded the area and it made the rents go skyhigh and made the area unaffordable to the artist community. This story repeats itself in many towns and cities all over the world, and so instead of dwelling on it, let us tell you which other neighborhoods have the galleries that you may want to atend. SoHo has become more of a shopping mall than a place to see intereating art work, although about 20 galleries are still located there.

The first place that comes to mind when one talks about the artists' and galleries' flight from SoHo is, of course, Chelsea. That's where many of SoHo galleries had to run to when the skyrocketed rent forced them to leave SoHo in the 90s. Chelsea art galleries are located between 18th and 28th Streets going South/North and between 10th and 11th Avenues going East/West. If you start there you may end staying there, as Chelsea's list of galleries has about 200 names or so.

Another gallery district is the Lower East Side, which is located east of Bowery and between Houston and Grand Streets. The galleries here usually show up and coming artists. You can see there lots of local grown art. The neighborhood is filled with inviting bars, cafes and restaurants, and with small smart clothing shops. So you can combine gallery hoping with bar hoping and with shopping for something off the beaten track.

Opening Reception | Understanding in Constant Flux: Smears and Scrapes in Painting

American painter Jeanette Mundt draws inspiration from a range of sources, whether personal photographs, popular culture, film or the art historical canon. Mundt's view is that our understanding is in constant flux, and that we therefore can't by any means be consistent in psychic space or in our seeing. Materiality and surface are central to the production of Mundt's pieces. She layers thick hues of pigments on one another, then smears, scrapes, or pulls them apart. She is best known for her works in the 2019 Whitney Biennial.

Opening Reception | Photographs Celebrating Unspectacular Events & Small Shifts in Everyday Life, with Artist Talk

Enjoy the exhibition opening of Regula Ruegg's A Light Within: Photos and Stone, a long-term photographic project that focuses on the often overlooked and subtle shifts that define everyday life. A Light Within also highlights the photographic depiction of Ruegg's sculptural work, rendered mostly in alabaster, and examines the surprising interplay and connection of the two mediums. Ruegg is especially interested in unspectacular events, the small shifts in everyday life, the often overlooked background of the grander things. These subtle and seemingly unpresuming themes are combined with still lifes and impressions from her travels. Recently she started her sculptural work with stone again, after a long period of concentrating on photography. The direct contact with stone - mostly alabaster - made a different creative experience and process possible. It also opened up a surprising connection between the two mediums. he opening reception will include an artist talk with the photographer. The exhibition will remain on view through October 29.

Opening Reception | (We are) Looking at Reality Through a Narrow Keyhole

Canadian artist Chloe Wise's work spans multiple media: sculptures, video, installations, and oil paintings. She has explored themes such as consumer culture, branding, performance, and identity. In all her work, she's used satire, irony, and humor to drive her point home. Her newest point of inspiration is that of perception and reality. The human eye and ear only detect minuscule percentages of what the electromagnetic and sound frequency spectras offer us. Moreso, we are naive and ignorant of what is lurking in our periphery. Wise's paintings are a collection of vignettes in a keyhole, emphasising the narrowness of our realities.

His primary style is painting, specifically notably mixing his own pigments and focusing on a warm earthy toned color palette.

Millington's quilted works build structure through color, texture, and repetition, while Shalev's folded stars transform light and shadow into shifting geometries. Together, their art turns mathematical ideas into mesmerizing visual experiences that invite close observation and discovery.

Open Studios | New York Artists of Influence: The 1980s Art Boom

The 1980s were a decade of discovery and new ideas; a sense of possibility and fluidity was infectious. Economic recession swung to prosperity, cable TV, along with commodification and consumer desire emerged, all while the Cold War and the HIV crisis came to the forefront. New York was a place at the center of all of this, being a place for discussion -- especially in the world of art. Ultimately, the 80s reflected a mass movement of youth popular culture from music into art. This exhibition celebrates all of these points, highlighting pieces from influential artists of the time, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Jeff Koons, Andy Warhol, and many more.

Opening Reception | Solo Exhibition Exploring the Power of Holding, Releasing, and Transforming Love

What Do I Do with All This Love by Valerie Huhn is a body of work that revisits a question Huhn first asked herself more than twenty-five years ago, when a move from New York City to San Francisco -- and an unexpected breakup -- left her wondering what to do with all the love she still carried. A Rilke quote gifted to her then urged patience and trust in life's unanswered questions. Decades later, standing in her studio surrounded by fingerprinted mylar sheets casting flickering reflections, she realized she was finally living her way into an answer -- through art. This show traces her journey from escaping a psychiatric hospital in Pennsylvania to the freedom she found in New York's creative community, and the hard-earned understanding that freedom and love must be nurtured and protected. What Do I Do With All This Love is both a question and a testament to the enduring power of holding, releasing, and transforming love.

Opening Reception | The Body Experience: Surveilled and Infiltrated

Contemporary visual and performance artist, P.Staff's newest installation finds a focal point in simulating the sensations of the human body, specifically when possessed or controlled. Staff explores the multiple connotations of the word "possessive" -- re-evaluating the ways in which we think of ownership and the body. Staff merges architecture with the body while psychically perverting our integration with the built environment. Her installation includes a central video project, which is spread across three floors, as well as a series of new sculptures.

Opening Reception | Two Artists Dissect Matter and Memory

Artists Erik Lindman and Augustus Thompson are debuting a joined exhibit all about matter and memory. The artists explore French philosopher Henri Bergson's proposition that matter could be seen as an aggregate of images. An image captures the half-way point between a thing and its representation.Thompson and Lindman explore the process of transference from memory to surface while questioning construction of its representation.

Opening Reception | Two-Artists Exhibition on Fame & Parasocial Relationships

This reception introduces Likenesses: Speaking with the Selves, a two-artist exhibition featuring Li-Ming Hu  and Charmaine Poh. This exhibition is the first pairing of their works. Central to this exhibition is a biographical experience shared by both artists—television fame at a young age. In the 2000’s, Hu received a breakout role on New Zealand’s popular soap-opera, Shortland Street, and was later cast as the silver operator on Power Rangers RPM, among other roles. Similarly, Poh starred as the character E-Ching in a hit Singaporean children’s detective show, We are R.E.M., around the same time. Hu’s and Poh’s works on display in this exhibition respond to this time in their lives. Revisiting their former roles, the artists now use performance, installation, and video to re-create and manipulate the context in which their likenesses were used. This exhibition foregrounds not only the parasocial relationship that viewers have with television characters, but also the (dis)connection that actors have with their past roles. Chatrooms and social media have given an unprecedented sense of intimacy between the viewer and the subject, further blurring the boundary between character and actor in their eyes.

Opening Reception | Oil on Canvas: Realities in Dystopias

Artist Sasha Gordon's pieces can best be described as hyperrealistic. Gordon's execution in technical precision in the layering of oils in electric hues begs to be celebrated. The artist unfolds surreal narratives on canvas, depicting absurd scenarios and disorienting spatial compositions. Ultimately, she reimagines fractions of extracted inner life with envisioned worlds. Her pieces address the viewer with candor in unsettling and familiar intimacy.

These works illustrate the periodical’s impact on painting, photography, performance, and page art. The accompanying catalog includes essays and interviews that trace the magazine’s role in fostering dialogue and innovation across Latin American art.
