Film | Rare Silent Films with Comedian Buster Keaton

Actor, comedian, filmmaker Buster Keaton (1895 - 1966) is best known for his silent film work, in which his trademark was physical comedy accompanied by a stoic, deadpan expression that earned him the nickname "The Great Stone Face." Trains frequently play important parts in Keaton films, particularly in Our Hospitality (1923). Buster's second feature film is set in 1831 and has him take a slow train from rural New York City to end up embroiled in the middle of a Hatfield and McCoy feud. Also on the program is The Love Nest (1923), which finds Buster on another travel-odyssey in his last short before diving into features.

Opening Reception | Haroshi: Dive in to the Pit

Through their daily practice, skaters develop the unique ability to revisit the spaces we inhabit and redefine everyday objects. Overlooked environments— such as an empty swimming pool, sidewalk curb, or the handrail of a staircase—inspire skaters to invent new tricks and shape their style. Fully immersed in a culture that celebrates new ways of reinventing forgotten or discarded objects, Haroshi layers and carves used skateboard decks from his community to create his artistic world. Comprised of entirely new works, Dive in to the Pit invites the viewer into the world of the skater and underground artist Haroshi. The exhibition title evokes the energy felt from diving into a mosh pit at a punk show and riding over the waves. The show invites the viewer to stand at the edge and drop into the “mosh pit of the skateboarding world.”

Opening Reception | John Bradford: For the Love of Paint

This show offers the artist’s latest grand plays of style, whimsy, wit, nostalgia, and, above all, explosive slashing, dabbing, scraping, and piling up of paint itself. Bradford’s process begins with the slightest of inclinations, such as a passing memory of seeing a Watteau from across a gallery as a young artist; the light, density, the feeling of overwhelming rightness the work exuded. But as this sensation begins to take form, it is processed, relentlessly, through an almost violent, expressionist technique. The resulting work is at once direct, almost simple in its physicality but also sophisticated and side-glancing in its subtle, emotional evocation of the quiet feelings a beloved artist’s works can inspire.

Opening Reception | UFO907: How Do You Spell New York?

UFO907's highly anticipated solo show features 24 new works of shaped canvases inspired by his beloved New York City. Influenced by the Dillinger song “Cocaine in My Brain,” where he asks “How do you spell New York?” UFO907 gives us this new body of work reflecting his interpretation of the same question. He pulls from his key ingredients from his personal cupboard, starting with a base in 1980s skateboard culture mixed with 26 years of graffiti work on the streets of New York. UFO907 aims to show us his interpretation of his New York City - its diversity, grittiness and classic city iconography.

Festival | Harvest Moon and Tsukimi Celebration

Celebrate Harvest Moon and Tsukimi. Harvest Moon refers to the full, bright Moon that occurs closest to the start of autumn. Farmers would rely on the harvest moon to harvest crops late into the night before they had electricity. In Japanese culture, Tsukimi means "moon-viewing," and is a festival that honors the autumn moon. This year, Harvest Moon and Tsukimi fall on September 10. The event will begin with a screening of the film Nourishing Japan, which "invites you to embark on a delicious journey from farmers’ field to school classroom that celebrates how one country has re-imagined school lunch and food education." Following the film, they will have a potluck celebration with games, music, and riceball making. Please bring your own food dish to share.

Concert | World Music Concert

Featuring: Adam Rudolph's Go: Organic Orchestra Featuring Hassan Hakmoun, Dave Liebman, Graham Haynes, and Brooklyn Raga Massive / Gift of Gnawa honoring Don Cherry / Brandee Younger and Joel Ross / Angel Bat Dawid (DJ Set) With a 37-year curatorial presence in NYC, World Music Institute is mainly known for presenting traditional and contemporary music from around the world. However, in the early years, the programming included a series rooted in the NYC jazz and improvised music scene, 'Improvisations'. The series brought together musicians from various backgrounds and cultures, many who had never performed together before, and gave them an opportunity to improvise and collaborate. This exciting, multi-artist launch event demonstrates and celebrates the lasting value and relevance of WMI's artistic vision of Many Cultures - One World. A core member of many of these original dates was drummer, percussionist, and often Acting Music Director Adam Rudolph, who has been hailed as "a pioneer in world music" by The New York Times and "a master percussionist" by Musician Magazine. Rudolph performed on over a dozen of these 'Improvisations' shows, many of which led to life-long musical relationships including with Yusef Lateef, Hassan Hakmoun, and Don Cherry, among others. Adam's later projects, 'Moving Pictures' and 'Go: Organic Orchestra' (featured at this event) were partly inspired by the unique Improvisation collaborations that he experienced at these WMI shows. Tonight Adam Rudolph reboots the 'Improvisations' series with an impressive lineup of musicians from many different backgrounds and musical influences.
