Birdwatching | Birding Park Walk


The history of birding and the park are inseparable. Influential birders such as Roger Tory Peterson and Allan D. Cruickshank got their starts on Van Cortlandt’s ecologically diverse grounds. To celebrate the tradition set forth by these great ornithologists, Bronx birders Joe McManus and Jack Rothman alternately guide these walks. Concert | Flamenco/Jazz Fusion and Gospel Performance, Documentary Screening, Talk about Flamenco's Origin and Future


Enjoy a new flamenco/jazz fusion work followed by a panel discussion on flamenco's origin and future with the performers and guests. The presentation opens with a screening of Gurumbe (2016), a documentary film exploring the fundamental contribution of Afro-Andalusians to the art of flamenco. About the film: Flamenco is synonymous with Spanish culture yet, since its inception, theorists have sidelined the fundamental contribution of Afro-Andalusians to the art form. Commercial exploitation of the American colonies brought hundreds of Africans to Spain to be enslaved. Music and dance were a fundamental part of their expression and the most important affirmation of their identity. As the Black population began to disappear from Spain in the late 19th century, so too did their contribution to this extraordinary art form. In Gurumbe: Afro-Andalusian Memories, their story is finally told. Directed by M. Angel Rosales, Spain/Mexico/Portugal/Senegal In Spanish with English subtitles. Masks and proof of vaccination are required.

Festival | Curtain Up Broadway Festival


Light the lights--the Curtain Up Broadway Festival has set a 2022 return. Set to be held September 30-October 2, the 3-day event will feature performances, a block party, and more, all culminating in a finale concert broadcast live on WABC featuring a host of Broadway favorites. A collaboration between Playbill, The Broadway League, and the Times Square Alliance, Curtain Up Broadway Festival is sponsored by Prudential Financial. Throughout the weekend, theatre fans will be able to visit a variety of interactive experiences, events, and intimate concerts, including sing-alongs, The Sing For Hope Piano, Playbill: The Game Show Live, an Alvin Ailey dance workshop and more. MARK MORRIS is praised as "the most successful and influential choreographer alive, and indisputably the most musical" (New York Times). He formed the Mark Morris Dance Group (MMDG) in 1980 and has since created over 150 works for the company. From 1988 to 1991, he was Director of Dance at the Theatre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, the national opera house of Belgium. In 1990, he founded the White Oak Dance Project with Mikhail Baryshnikov. Morris is also an acclaimed ballet choreographer, with twenty-two works commissioned by ballet companies worldwide. The repertoire includes: Water, Greek To Me, Orfeo ed Euridice (excerpts from a larger Opera), and Dancing Honeymoon (excerpts)

Classical Music | Vocal Chamber Ensembles: Songs Inspired by Middle English and Elizabethan Mystical Poetry


Vocal chamber ensemble The Faucon is a tribute to mid-20th-century and contemporary composers that created new works inspired by “mystical” Middle English and Elizabethan poetry. The ensemble 2Flutes will perform songs and vocal chamber music by John Edmunds and his contemporaries such as American composer Ramiro Cortés, perhaps the first Mexican-American to achieve recognition as a composer of music in the classical idiom, Sheree Clement, and Juliana Hall.

Talk | Artist Talk: Reconstructions of Place and Identity


A first-generation American born in Chicago to Colombian and Mexican parents, Harold Mendez works with installation, photography, sculpture, and text to reference reconstructions of place and identity. His work addresses the relationships between transnational citizenship, memory and possibility, considering how history is not only an affirmed past, but a potential future. His recent work examines how reclaimed objects, makeshift monuments and images reveal a life parallel to conflict, demonstrating both factual evidence and where traces of fiction emerge. Selected exhibitions include the 2017 Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Renaissance Society; Museum of Modern Art / PS1, New York; Studio Museum, Harlem; Drawing Center, New York; Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; Project Row Houses, Houston; and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia.
