Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors
In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 11 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942.

Forum | Jaipur Literary Festival
Session 1, 11 am: Molly Crabapple in Conversation "Art was my dearest friend. To draw was trouble and safety, adventure and freedom. In that four-cornered kingdom of paper, I lived as I pleased. This is the story of a girl and her sketchbook." Drawing from conflict, art, and reportage, artist and writer Molly Crabapple's work weaves together the psychological and physical horrors of war through illustrations. Crabapple's contribution to Brothers of the Gun: A Memoir of the Syrian War by Marwan Hisham brings to life a ground-level reflection of the Syrian revolution. In her memoir, Drawing Blood, Crabapple masterfully engages with how we think about art, sex, politics, and survival in our wrought times. In this session Crabapple discusses the beauty and chaos of her art and its intended impact. As part of the Jaipur Literature Festival, Crabapple will speak about life, art, and the gripping reportage which won her last year's Bernhart Labor Journalism award. Session 2, 12:15 pm: Madhur Jaffrey in Conversation with Sanjoy K. Roy In a recent interview with The New York Times, Madhur Jaffrey called herself "the original Spice Girl." Her definitive cookbook An Invitation to Indian Cooking, reissued this year, introduced Western readers to the sophisticated dishes of subcontinental cuisine, through a volume the Times named "the final word on the subject." But Jaffrey is also a famous actress, with credits which range from Merchant-Ivory's acclaimed film Shakespeare-Wallah to this year's And Just Like That. In this special daytime event, Jaffrey discusses her many lives and the intensity with which she has lived them, from her early years in New Delhi, India to her association with Merchant Ivory and Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, to her life in cuisine. Lecture | To Stop and to See. The Problem of Abdication in King Lear and Succession
The creators of the TV drama Succession have been vocal about their debt to Shakespeare, feeding some of his most recognizable citations into the screenplay. Focusing only on the resuscitation of King Lear, this talk, in turn, offers a textual triangulation by including Stanley Cavell’s idiosyncratic reading of this tragedy in the conversation. The connection this opens between seriality and tragedy revolves around the repetition compulsion of shaming and the inability to acknowledge the fragility of power, and as such asks what it would take to avoid the tragic demise of a family. Speaker Elisabeth Bronfen is Professor of English and American Studies at the University of Zurich.

Discussion | Acclaimed Broadway and Off-Broadway Theater Photographers Discuss Their Careers
Over the last 30 years, Joan Marcus and Carol Rosegg have been two of the most prolific photographers of Broadway and Off-Broadway theatre. Between the two of them, they photographed nearly a thousand productions, documenting many of the most iconic theatrical moments of a generation. In an interview, Marcus and Rosegg recount their experiences documenting theatre, discuss the changes they've experienced as the profession transitioned from film to digital media, and discuss the future of performance photography in the era of ubiquitous pocket cameras and social media.

Discussion | Beyond the Flat: Performance and Representation (online)
With the advent of the selfie and contemporary discussions around representation, there is a growing sense of the limits and possibility of a portrait. Circulated images can raise the profile of an individual, capture the pulse of the moment, yet can also broadcast unhelpful and unexamined narratives. For the last year artists Zachary Fabri and Samantha Box have been in discussion with these ideas. Along the way, Box was commissioned to take a portrait of Fabri, who responded to the portrait through a live performance at the Weeksville Heritage Center. Join Fabri and Box as they talk about their process, and expand the proverbial frame of portraiture to consider the lifeforce of an image, the sitter, the viewer, and the context of making a picture.

Concert | Brass Orchestra and Broadway Guest Celebrate Duke Ellington, John Williams and Others
For its 40th anniversary, Gramercy Brass Orchestra performs works to celebrate the 90th birthday of film composer John Williams as well as the legendary Duke Ellington, The Music Man composer Meredith Willson, Sir Arthur Sullivan, Rafael Hernandez, Arthur Prior. Highlights of the program will include guest appearances by Broadway star, vocalist and actor Matthew Hydzik and legendary NYC trumpet soloist from The Music Man orchestra, Wayne Du Maine. Special guest emcee will be Michael Schuil, voice over artist, singer and actor. Members of Gramercy Brass Orchestra has appeared with the NY Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera, American Ballet Theatre, as well as many Broadway show orchestras.

Talk | It Takes a Village: Unsung Women and Their Contributions to Silent Film (online)
In the first two decades of the 20th century, the nascent silent film industry offered women numerous opportunities to make a significant impact in the field. Mostly marginalized and forgotten over time, these women contributed heavily to early Hollywood filmmaking, doing everything from editing to designing, producing to directing. While some like Alice Guy-Blaché, Lois Weber, and Mary Pickford are well known by cinema buffs, many unsung pioneers like Clare West, Elsa Lopez, and Marion Fairfax still live in obscurity. This lecture will acknowledge these many women’s talents and provide the recognition they deserve. Film historian and writer Mary Mallory is the author of four books and a blogger on Los Angeles and early film history. She has contributed to the Women Film Pioneers Project, the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, and American History magazine. She has lectured at the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum, Hollywood Heritage Museum, and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UCLA, and she currently serves on Hollywood Heritage’s Board of Directors.

Book Discussion | Nobel Laureate Abdulrazak Gurnah Talks About his Novel Afterlives (in-person and online)
Abdulrazak Gurnah, winner of the 2021 Nobel Prize in Literature, discusses his latest novel, Afterlives, a sweeping saga of displacement, loss, and love set in early 20th-century East Africa. The Zanzibari-born, British-based writer Abdulrazak Gurnah was awarded the most recent Nobel Prize in Literature for his "uncompromising and compassionate penetration of the effects of colonialism and the fate of the refugee in the gulf between cultures and continents." Those powers are on full display in his most recent novel, Afterlives, an intimate account of characters' fates and fortunes as they grapple with brutal German colonial rule in early 20th-century East Africa. Filled in equal measure with devastation and hope, Afterlives lays bare an underappreciated piece of history, witnessed through the eyes of those who were forced to live it. Abdlurazak Gurnah speaks with Nadia Owusu about his new book, and his lifelong pursuit of historical reckoning.

Dance Performance | Music and Choreography of Melancholy and Longing
sueno is a new music project of tiny epic songs dedicated to melancholy and longing. Miguel Gutierrez is a choreographer, performer, music maker, writer, video artist, educator and Feldenkrais Method practitioner. He makes performances to create empathetic and irreverent spaces to talk about things in complicated ways beyond the limitations of propriety, party lines, and conventional logic. His performances are immediate and honest, untamed, and flush with joyful color, bringing audiences together in the experience of being alive. Gutierrez uses dreamy synth sounds, spare arrangements, and his long standing obsession with church-like harmonies. The special performance expands his vision to incorporate dancers and live musicians offering the audience a heightened world of fantastical drama.
