Book Discussion | Reading and Discussion with Writer Anne Boyer

A reading by Anne Boyer followed by a conversation/Q&A with Hari Kunzru and a reception/signing. Poet and essayist Anne Boyer was born and raised in Kansas. She earned a BA from Kansas State University and an MFA from Wichita State University. Her works include The Romance of Happy Workers (2006), My Common Heart(2011), Garments Against Women (2015, 2016), which Maureen McLane described as “a sad, beautiful, passionate book that registers the political economy of literature and of life itself,” and Handbook of Disappointed Fate (2018). According to critic Chris Strofollino, Boyer’s work “widens the boundaries of poetry and memoir as we know them.” She was the inaugural winner of the 2018 Cy Twombly Award for Poetry from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts and winner of the 2018 Whiting Award in nonfiction/poetry. She was also awarded the Windham-Campbell Literature Prize in early 2020 and the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction for her book The Undying: Pain, Vulnerability, Mortality, Medicine, Art, Time, Dreams, Data, Exhaustion, Cancer, and Care. Boyer lives in Kansas City, Missouri, where since 2011 she has been a professor at the Kansas City Art Institute.

Workshop | Learn to Play Petanque

Interested in learning to play petanque? Stop by the petanque courts for free lessons and casual play. Members of La Boule New Yorkaise (one of the oldest petanque clubs in the U.S.) have been playing in the ark since the 1970s, and will be staffing the courts with expert instructors who are eager to share pétanque with you. Petanque is an outdoor bowling game, similar to bocce, that was developed in the south of France early in the 20th century. It’s a game accessible to varying physical abilities and ages, can be played on more or less any patch of dirt, and is extremely easy to learn. Despite that simplicity, it is a technically and strategically stimulating game that is easy to fall in love with.

Lecture | Two Revolutionary Jews: Leon Trotsky and Chaim Zhitlowsky (in-person and online)

What role should Jews play in revolutionary movements? Should they act collectively on their own behalf or as indistinct individuals within majority populations in the interest of universalistic ideals? Or was this a false dichotomy? These questions have defined the basis of left-wing Jewish politics since the 19th century. In this lecture, Tony Michels explores two different approaches to revolutionary Jewish politics, as defined by Leon Trotsky and Chaim Zhitlowsky. Both were Russian-born Jews who played seminal roles in the Russian revolutionary movement. Both also came to be seen as embodiments of the modern Jewish experience. However, they gave radically different answers to the predicament of modern Jewry.
